Dahon Mariner D8 Dead on Arrival?

Hello, I ordered Dahon Mariner D8 from Dahon USA website, apparently, they had to ship it from some reseller in Illinois. I just unboxed the bike and it looks like it has few scratches here and there and what's most important - chainwheel is bent so chain comes off as I spin it. I attached a video to demonstrate the issue.

I'm not really sure what should I do next - contact Dahon support and spend few weeks emailing them hoping they send a replacement or pay for returning the bike. Or should I go to local NYC Dahon dealer to get it fixed, again, probably paying the same amount I would pay for returning it. It's my first online bike purchase, does anyone know what to do in this situation?

I'll try to reach them tomorrow, but in general what do you think? Should it be sent back or this issue is easily fixable? I'm just losing $70-80 anyway if I send it back, maybe it's enough to actually go to NYCewheel or bfold or any other authorized Dahon shop in the city to get it fixed and to get scratches painted over or something.

I would contact Thor and ask for advice and help in having this rectified. ThorUSA You could also post this on the folding forum at Folding and Travel Bikes - Mtbr.com Thor hosts that forum.

It’s under warranty. Don’t stuff around. If you attempt a repair you’ve voided that. You should contact the people you bought the bike from first, silly doing anything else.

The contract has been breached. Talk to the seller. If no agreeable solution can be found, the Credit Card company is your next step.

A lot of conjecture here. There is nothing to suggest Dahon won't fix this and be honorable. Bad s%$t can happen in shipping.

Why not give Dahon a chance to fix this?

Dear lord! Just contact the company you purchased it from,... Saying "the contract has been breached", and all this other negativity, is ridiculousness. Dahon will cover you no matter what.

Also, contact Thor at ThorUSA.com if the original seller gives you a problem. He's the USA representative.

Also, as stated, DO NOT REPAIR THE BIKE. THIS WILL VOID THE WARRANTY. It's a damaged bike, and has to be returned. The company you purchased it from is responsible for shipping it back, and sending you a 100% working bike. I, personally, know nothing about "Sports By Sager".

I ended up contacting the seller company and they told me to go to a local Dahon dealer store to get these issues repaired possibly under warranty. The seller mentioned they might cover the cost of the replacement/repair work. I think this applies both to bent chainwheel and to scratches. I got the same response from ThorUSA. They all directed me to a local Dahon dealer store.I got to the store today and they told me to leave the bike there. They are going to contact Dahon and ask for any replacement parts and if warranty covers any service. If it's not covered by warranty, the seller (as promised) might reimburse all costs.
Note, none of them told me to return the bike. I believe that damage is not critical and nobody wants to mess with the pain of returning it etc. So I left the bike at a dealer store and will wait for around a week or so to get any updates from them.

I also need to mention that the box was intact and not damaged at all. Bike inside didn't have any foam or support at all, it was just sitting there with pieces of bubble wrap around some areas of the frame. I don't know if it's normal. But it really looks like reseller just shipped me already damaged/scratched bike without any QC. I hope they repair my bike and I will be able to ride it finally in a week or two.
Here are few images of damaged areas that might not be clear enough on that video:

And I think I see the reason why they could advise me to go to the store instead, not to return it. Dahon online shop states this:
Defective Items
A defective item is one that is inoperable but has no apparent damage. If you receive defective merchandise, please contact Service Provider for assistance.
It looks like it's my case.

Screw repair. You need a new, unscratched-and-bent Mariner 8, which is what you paid for. Demand a new bike and they can sell that one as used. Because it's used.

Well lesson learned, Dahon. I keep my fingers crossed that they repair it and make it rideable for years to come. But in future, I'm getting BF or Brompton.
Return the damn bike. You're a fool if you don't. It's damaged, and it's all scratched up. You paid for a new bike, and received damaged, possibly returned goods.

So this bike belongs in the trash?

I think a new crank, and touch up paint will solve the problem.

Thanks

Alright, I contacted the seller and they told me the bike was already sent/returned once, that's why it's damaged. I wonder why on Earth would they put it on sale again as a "new" one?
Needless to say I requested a return immediately. I think I would need to wait for refund and then order a different bike, maybe through ThorUSA directly so I could communicate with them to make sure they send me a new bike next time. I will still lose $70 on shipping FROM Dahon twice, as nobody covers that expense, unless Thor accomodates all of the incovenience I experienced.

I suspect if you had bought it from Thor in the first place the shipping would be covered. I assume you got a deal on this one is why you bought it where you did. I hope you get what you want out of this but remember price isn't always the most important thing in buying something. Roger

If your bike was presented as new - and sold with a new MSRP, not an adjusted one when it had already been returned once, that's a shady business practice. It should have been labeled as a return, second, irregular, etc., with all deficiencies noted and price adjusted to match. Selling a used/returned bike as new is just asking for trouble.

I would be on the horn to that dealer asking exactly kind of business is being run there and what their policy is selling used equipment as new. If you don't get a decent response to this - meaning full refund including shipping - I'd be examining recourse through your credit card company.

Thor would have been the best person to purchase the bike from,...he's even on Amazon. I've purchased a bike, and othef items, from him before. There's never been an issue.

I totally agree. I don't know why Dahon USA chose this dealer in the first place, I had no control over that process whatsoever. I ordered through Dahon official website and only found out about the dealer when I received a tracking number and saw that it's coming from some store.

You will be surprised, no deal at all. I went to Dahon USA online store, clicked "order" and paid $660 including shipping cost. So you can consider it part of official Dahon service.

I'll keep you posted about the progress of that. I wish I knew about ThorUSA better quality before trusting official Dahon website.

Yikes. So you order a new bike through the Dahon website and this is what you get? If I were in Dahon upper management, I'd be going through the roof right about now. This is exactly the kind of negative customer experience which can dissuade others from ordering direct through the company website. Wow.

Yes, exactly that. Getting a brand new 2018 bike was the whole reason I ordered it through Dahon website, not even Amazon or Thor or any other seller.

Since the seller intentionally sent you a used/damaged bike they're legally responsible for return costs. This doesn't sound right to me,...and the Dahon website doesn't sell the bikes (in the USA,...ymmv). You did a dealer search, and selected a seller. Dahon didn't directly sell the bike,...

No, sorry but you are completely wrong. I went here Dahon Bikes USA - Home and ordered from here. Unless this is a fake website by seller or something, I DID NOT do any dealer search or selected any seller.

I see what you mean it gives some weird error in German, maybe just a website bug? I don't even know Sir. The physical address they provide there is Thor's address. I don't think it's a scam and it's definitely not seller's website in any way. Remember Thor replied to me and even apologized for inconvenience. I also have official holo sticker on that bike and I was able to register it at dahon.com website.
I see your suspicion, but I think it is their actual official online store.

Aha, we have a mystery!

This is the OP's website where it was purchased (note it is not secure, and isn't this Thor's business address?):

Dahon Bikes USA - Home

This is where you go from the Dahon world website and then select USA (note it is secure):

https://usa.dahon.com/

OP, I think you purchased from what you thought was the official Dahon USA website, but since the two websites are different, I dunno.
