Oh, I've been pounding out a few miles on my Bike Friday.

What are people using for 451 tires?

I think my bike came with Schwalbe Durano tires. They seemed to be doing well. A bit wide for my tastes. Eventually the rear sidewalls started separating.

I thought I had ordered Shwalbe Ultremo tires, but they seem to be Schwalbe One tires. So far so good, but they seem to be lacking puncture protection and are wearing very fast.

Hmmm, I'm seeing a Schwalbe Rightrun Wheelchair tire for dirt cheap.

What are other people using?

Seeing you are in BFs home I would go down to the plant and ask what they think are the best. If its lunch time they would probably help you a lot. For my Pocket Rocket which I have had since 1995 I have used everything the BF has/had over the years. I liked Comets, Continentals and 4 or 5 others. One kind was not better than the other they were just different. Softer ride, better cornering, longer wear, flat resistance, traction and on and on. You will not find one tire that has all of these and hopefully you can find one that has the 2 or 3 you want the most. What do you want? Roger

PS YOU DO NOT WANT WHEEL CHAIR TIRES. They may fit the bike but are not made for bikes. What is you body worth? Continentals were the ones I liked best. Nor sure they have or make them anymore. Roger

I'm not seeing any Continental tires in the 451 size.

There is the Continental Contact Speed in 406.

I might talk to Bike Friday. I'm pretty sure they still sell the Schwalbe Duranos.

I use Panaracer Minits lite currently, used to use Schwalbe One. I switched because the Panaracer are wider and lower pressure and thus are better on roads that arent perfectly smooth, makes a big difference to the riding, can feel the extra cushioning. But if I had a velodrome near by I would switch back to the ones maybe, they had a lot of grip and were fine. Just too narrow for urban riding.

My trip times to work havent changed, still takes 50mins to 1 hour (14kms though the heart of Tokyo), all dependent on lights and wind. So I am obviously not losing out or gaining in speed with the more comfortable tyres on my Tyrell CSI.

I have the Duranos on my 24 inch wheel. Good quality fast riding tire. Fine on dirt and gravel paths. Not great on wet roads and looses contact on the rear wheel if you brake too hard.

Lots to think about. I'm hoping for a few days out on the road in about a month.

I'm leaning towards maybe trying the Primo Champion or Primo Comet. Maybe some Schwalbe Ones as spares.

Or, I'm thinking about 20 to 40 miles of gravel. I think I have some micro-knobbies around here somewhere I could bring for the gravel days, and spares.

Small tires will tend to wear faster, more revolutions than a larger diameter tire for any given distance. So the tire equation is all about balancing comfort, ride quality, resistance to punctures, weight and wear.

I haven't found a magic tire in 451 yet that balances all the above effectively. In the olden days, Primo Comets were great, but they wear quickly and then get quite slick. I have IRC RoadLites in 451, haven't worn through too many of those yet, seem to wear a little better than the Comets.

I have the Duranos on one folder. Not enough miles to formulate an opinion on wear or comfort. Schwalbes look kinda chunky to me, which I know is completely subjective. I like the look of the older, less chunky tires on my rides.

After a couple of tire meltdowns, including a rather dramatic explosion when I wasn't even anywhere near the bike, I'm trying the DTH on my Pocket Rocket, and like them so far. Good tread for the gravel you always hit on European bike trails, and they are wearing well. Toes crossed.

Used to use Schwalbe Ultremo and they were the most supple I have used from 700c, 18", 406 and 451.
I think it was replaced by the One.
Now, Im using Panaracer Minits Lite, which is not too bad.
Wider for better traction on poorer roads, but not as light nor supple as the Ultremos.

Kenda and Durano are about the same in durability and ride feel.

Unlikely, as many of the channel gurus tend to look down on tires labelled/marketed as BMX. Not me, though, as I have the good sense to see beyond corporate market segmentation, care about actual performance rather than labels and have actually ridden BMX tires with nothing but good results.

My real-world, rubber-on-the-road experience with BMX tires includes three Maxxis BMX tires in their kevlar/folding variants: the DTH, Torch and Grifter. In the case of the Taiwan-made Grifter, inspection of the inner carcass reveals a high-quality weave construction. In all cases, though, I've been pleased with their build and performance. Maxxis is solid so if these tires appeal to you, I'd say, go for it. 👍🏼

I so wish they made 451 iso tires in a 1 1/4" (32 mm) width, but alas I have never found any. Anyone else know of any ?

They seem to go from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 and the latter are getting hard to find. The nominal 1 3/8" tires I use measure at around 32mm, probably because my rims are narrow.

I have a cut in my comet tire and wanting to select a few new tires to install..

I am using Schwalbe Duranos on both my R-20 and on my Ti-Swift, they are fast and have held up well.
