curve handlebar stem qr problem
 

hi all, it is a long time - a very very long time - since I have taken my Curve out, and I can't work out what I am doing wrong with my handlebar stem extender QR. It is either too tight to lock, or too loose and the stem slides up and down. Any ideas what I am doing wrong ?

Well, the fastener is bent, so that may be part of the problem.

thank you I wasn't sure if it was designed like that. Do you or does anyone know if this is a standard part or I need to get one from Dahon ?

Your local bike shop could sell replacement QR. If you don’t need to have the steerer tube collapse, you could replace the fastener with a screw. You would then need a tool adjust the hight.

Question, Was there a sleeve insert in the tube before? Some have this in the seat tube to prevent the post sliding.

That one is a poor design. It seems to me that it is bent to begin with as part of the design. The force through the threaded section is not in line with the cylindrical part it threads into. Measure the diameter and do a search on eBay. . There should be many available. Try to find one with a stainless steel threaded shaft. Better ones are aluminum with stainless shafts and long closing handle for easier use. Also check the hole at the end of the slot on the stem riser for cracks.

You might have to ask for a quick release seatpost clamp bolt to get what you what.

The clamp is a standard, commonly available part. Make sure you order the correct diameter as these clamps when used on steel frames tend to be narrower than those used on the typically wider Al-alloy tubing.

Can I just thank everyone (belatedly) for this. Bike and me temporarily seperated so not had chance to effect repair, but now confident it can be done. Thank you so much guys.
