Moulton Stowaway

Having gotten the Moulton bug after spending some months on my APB, I came across this diamond-in-the-rough for sale in the UK. The bike arrived disassembled, and mostly ready to be stripped down and restored, but I wanted to take it for a ride beforehand.

The hub bearings and bottom bracket were binding, the headset was gritty, the brake caliper was bent, the pedal axles werenít straight, and the wheels werenít true, but an hour or so of wrenching made it rideable.

Despite its ugliness, it rides quite nicely, with no rattles or squeaks, the two-speed rear hub with its coaster brake works properly, and with the front caliper bent back into shape and with new brake pads installed, it stops pretty well.

New rims and spokes are on the way, along with a new headset, bottom bracket, bearings, pedals, etc. Also new n the way is a new bushing kit for the rear fork, and new hardware. Iíll strip off the paint next week and get it prepped for paint, and hopefully Iíll have it on the road in August.

i plan to take this bike out to our place at the beach, and use it to get around out there.

That will be a fun one at the beach. I take my Brompton to the beach as well. Just donít expect to go over drifting sand buildups with those skinny tires.

I had a Moulton APB model and well before that a Huffy-Moulton 4-speed standard which I liked as much as the APB.
