Thank you, you're right, I did forget about that (and as I was writing I thought I had remembered 400% (not claimed but gear inch range close to my 21-85), but looked up BWR and found 300%, I had totally forgotten about the 2X crank. Happens these days.) I had immediately thought, a chain lubed with wax or similar would make changing rings a lot neater. Fortunately, the Brompton comes stock with a long-arm derailleur to take up chain slack when folding, so should easily accommodate a 2X. I did the same setup (2X, no FD) on my folder as a trial to check the benefit of a full conversion, immediate improvement, even with only 52/42, the 50/34 and FD I finally did was a huge improvement over only 52 in the hills here.
