I use plastic bags on the shoes
As I departed the house, I wondered if this was the correct day for a bike ride. The temperature was supposed to rise to 6C where I was headed. I used the plastic bag trick on clipless road bike shoes. Eye protection cleaned and checked, good to go. I turned out to be a very nice day. 50+ miles today on the bike and the legs felt good.

The plastic bag trick is to put them on over your socks and inside your shoes, for extra warmth in cold weather?
I had thought plastic bags were more for when its raining? I rode for 7 hours in torrential rain (on the Alps to Ocean in New Zealand) 2 days ago - got soaked through under all my "waterproofs" including overboots- should have added a layer of plastic bags too! Yet it was strangely enjoyable - maybe it was just the thought that it's still better than the best day in the office ... |

For colder days: bubble wrap. In my case, found roadside at just the opportune time. My formula has always been: thin polypro sock + bag + thicker wool sock The theory is that perspiration wets the thin sock and the bag keeps the perspiration from evaporating (cooling) while at the same time creating a wetsuit of sorts that holds heat. The outer wool sock is for additional insulation. |
I have used plastic bags over just the front third or so of my socks so that the shoe mesh vents were blocked, blocking the air flow. But I did not want to block the remaining parts of my socks from being breathable, as when I warm up I wanted any sweat to be able to evaporate. I only wanted to disable the shoe venting.
An FYI, you can buy waterproof socks. I have also used those in colder weather. Seal Skinz and Dexshell are popular brands. I have some Dexshell ones. I have not stepped in a puddle to test them, but I put my hand in them in a sink full of water, they passed that test. |
Bubble wrap... opportunistic genius.
