NYT folding bike article

Just in case anyone's interested...

Today's Sunday New York Times has a nice article about folding bikes. Here's the link:

https://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/11/bu...y/11cycle.html

It's free but you may need to register. Also, grab it in the next few day. The NYT archives their articles in fairly short order and you may not be able to access it if you wait.

It was a good article. But not very informative about the brands of bikes - I am particularly curious about the one with wheels on the rack so it could be rolled after folding.

From that article I learned that there's Brompton and there's Birdy, and they cost at least a thousand dollars. Does anybody else make folders? Hmmmm....

edit: whoops, the section of Business this is in is "Spending", so I guess that was the implication--that these are all high-end luxury goods.

Thanks for pointing that out. Maybe times are a changing heavily toward folding bikes. Just last week the Santa Fe New Mexican devoted almost the whole first page of their business section to our folders-only shop.

The Brompton, for one.

Nifty article, but yeah, definitely lacking in the model department. No love for Dahon? Boo! They could have also mentioned that you can get into all sorts of places (e.g. bagel shops and some office buildings which stupidly ban bikes) with a folder.

thanks for the link! the link below may stay 'good' longer, as it's composed to circumvent the Times archiving thing.

Article

i live in brooklyn and have had a folder here for years. but i swear that just in the past several months i have noticed a marked increase of people riding them around here. then again, i many people I know in the area have had bikes stolen in the past year, so maybe some want the added security the bikes offer.

I happened to be at that store the day the reporter was to arrive. There were more than Birdy's and Bromps there, as I had test-ridden both the Bromp and the Swift. I can't tell you why no mention was made of the Swift.

Perhaps it was an editorial decision...

In the review of the F600:

"It has 20-inch wheels, thumb-controlled shifting, nine speeds, a bell and even a kickstand (rare on fold-ups)"

Did anybody archive that first article? I seem to have forgotten to do so, and now someone at work is very interested in a folder, so I'd like to show her the article.
