Folders at New York 5 Boro ride?

I've tried to post this several times, but something seems to be going on with the web page. Let's see if I get lucky this time.

The New York 5 Boro bike ride will be on May 7. I sent in my entry last week. Was wondering how many folder folks from this forum will be there and what they'll be riding.

I'll most likely be riding my BF Pocket Tourist, but if the mood strikes me, I might show up on my Twenty.

I participated once before, the year before last. It can be a fun ride, even though you'll see actual bicycle traffic jams at spots along the route. Didn't see too many folders last time, hope to see more this year.

Oh, you mean the 5 Boro Bicycle March? I pity anyone who isn't in the VIP section and wants to hammer all day long....

I'm riding my Dahon Mariner with a crew of co-workers, who I assume will use those big bulky 700c bikes.

Uh oh... reality check. My GF is really jazzed to do this ride. I am always at work on Sunday's and have never given it much thought through the years. We met last September and on our first date rented a tandem in Central Park. We bought a cheap tandem shortly after and have been riding all winter. I commute daily on a Giant Halfway but she is blind and can only ride our tandem. So the 1/2way is free on Sunday if someone wants it. "J" heard about the 5 Boro from a friend and has been begging to enter us. I have put in for the day but I really thought it would be a 'hammer all day' kind of deal. I hope the o.p. doesn't mind the hijack but I'd like a little more insight on the ride itself since the cat is out of the bag as it were.

The OP doesnt' mind. Think of it as a Sunday family outing with 30,000 family members, at different levels of fitness and skill. A typical casual pace for me over this terrain and distance might be 15 mph average. When I rode this once before, I averaged 11 mph (moving average, not true average). The farther you are toward the back, the more delays and outright stoppages there are. I started only a couple of blocks in back of the "VIP" section, and after I passed the stop at the 19.0 mile mark, I was able to keep going pretty steadily. I still had to ride very slowly at times because of the number of other bicyclists.

I enjoyed it as a chance to see the city in a different way, and ride on roads that are normally not available to bicyclists. It's also sometimes fun to take part in a big event. If you just want a good, hard, challenging, club ride, though, you'd be better off with something smaller.

So who's gonna be there? I'll be riding the behemoth below. Maybe we can get a Raleigh 20 squadron together.

Hopefully I'll be early enough to catch the 5:00 a.m. Staten Island Ferry, and start only a couple of blocks back. It will be the BF this year; although I did give some thought to riding my Twenty. I'll be on the lookout for all folders, and other interesting bikes.

I really really wanted to go, but won't be. I just started back into riding back in the Fall (4 miles r/t to work each day, rain or shine...or snow), and don't think I've adequately built up to a 35-mile ride. There's always next year though.

Dafrimon,

I will also be trying to catch the 5am ferry and will be riding my Raleigh Twenty, so keep an eye out for a green twenty next to a really big brown man(I'm a 6' 230lb filipino),

Hello to all the Folder Riders in NYC!

I will be on a red Brompton and my wife will be on a light blue Breezer i3. This is our first major biking or sports event and we are both new to all this and would be happy if we can do at least over 20 miles, but aim to see if we can ride the entire 42 miles. We will look forward being in the back so we can take our time and stay out of other riders way. Also looking forward to count and see as many folders as I can. It might be nice to get a group photo of folding bikes finishing BikeNY at the end? Is that a silly idea?

Damn, you are a big Filipino. I'm jealous. Not of the weight, just the height.

Anyways, I don't have a folder, but I'll be riding except I'm skipping the start and catching up in Central Park. The last time I rode a few years ago I actually bailed around the start of the BQE in Bklyn cuz it was taking so ridiculously long. I'll be on a blue IRO fixie so if you see me, say Hi.

I saw a Bike Friday with a Brooks saddle and (I think) an olive Brooks saddle bag? Anyone, anyone?

I just got back from the ride, and thought I'd add just a couple of things.

One person can only see a fraction of all the bikes there, but the number of folders I spotted myself was a disappointing four, not counting my own Pocket Tourist. Two Dahons, two BFs, and one I-don't-know. Couldn't spot the name, but it had 20 inch wheels and a hinge in the middle.

I got there really early, and was as close to the front as you can be without paying the VIP fee (or being one of those sneaky individuals who wait further up the course for the lead riders to roll by, and merge with them there). There were still delays, but they weren't intolerable. I'm back home, but it wouldn't shock me if the stragglers were still rolling in.

All in all, it's a fun ride if you don't obsess about speed. Just enjoy the day, the views, and the chance to ride on roads that are normally closed to cyclists.

Just saw JYossarian's post. I've got a Brooks saddle and a Rivendell Baggins bag. If the bike was black, with H bars, ridden by a shortish middle-aged guy with glasses, it could have been me. But there had to be other Friday people there.

I finished at around 11:25 on my Dahon Speed P8.

I must have been one of the fastest folders there... I had a Mets game to catch. And when I arrived at Shea the security guy was surprised at my vest.

It was a pain riding with nagging tendonitis on my right leg the whole ride, but it was a lot of fun!

I just got back as well. What a great ride-- sure most of it was relaxed, but I stretched it out a bit towards the Verazano. I didn't keep count, but I talked to a guy with a Mu SL (he likes it), and saw a Brompton, a Dahon Jack and pretty much the rest of their lineup, as well as a few BFs.

Me, I was one of the thousands of guys on a 20 year old road bike.

Well, I saw a Birdy, one other Dahon, a few BF's and a couple of Bromptons. I was also a bit surprised by how few folders were out there, since they're much more common on the West Side Greenway than at the 5 Boro.

Since I spent most of my time passing all those people riding on those funny-looking bikes with the big wheels, I can't imagine why anyone would think a folder isn't the right kind of bike for a short ride like this...

Hmm...it might've been you, although I didn't give the rider much of a glance. Too interested in the bike. I saw it was a black BF, but couldn't really tell what kind of bag it was. I saw the honeycolored Brooks and saw the bag w/ a logo stamped on brown leather and the bag looked to have two brown leather straps. If that was you, I was the one on the blue IRO fixie that rode by. I was also one of the riders that joined the ride after it started. Bad memories of walking most of the tour in years past led me to join up in Central Park this year.

Probably me, that's a good description of the bag, which looks like this:

The only fixie I specifically noticed passing me was purple, and looked like a track bike, but I was passed by many riders.

Well then, a belated "Hi"! I think I passed by around Williamsburg near one of the accidents on the left where it bottlenecked slightly due to the accident.

Hey, Pharnabazos, was that you I saw on the Raleigh Twenty before the ride started? It looked like the bike, but the rider didn't look like your avatar. I had a great ride on my Twenty and saw 4 bike fridays, a birdy, several boardwalks, and 2 dahon speed pros. I might also add that I was zipping around at an avg of 17-18mph (we did a few stretches at 21-22mph, but had to slow down for traffic.,,duh!) when not walking my bike and passed TONS of bikers. That's probably why I saw more folders than some of you. I was also dissapointed by the folder turnout, though.

Yeah, that was me waiting for some other people near the VIP section at Leonard and Church. BTW my avatar is just a random pic of Robert Blake from David Lynch's Lost Highway

Was that you trying to get my attention while I was zoning out listening to NPR?

Yep, that was me alright. I can't believe I actually saw someone from this forum (or any of the forums that I visit) in that huge sea of humanity,

I didn't ride my folder as the wife and I were on a rented tandem. I had told her about Bike Friday tandems as we were riding along in the 5BBT and how I dream of us getting it... AND WE SAW ONE ON THE ROAD. How cool is that? It was a mother captain with child stoker. They seemed happy with it. Anyhow I didn't see as many folders as I thought I'd see but I think that's because of the dilution factor of the 5BBT (many more casual riders who haven't been on the bike much).

oboeguy, you gotta post a pic of yourself if you want us to recognize you. I kept wondering which one of the next tandems I run into would be yours.
