Schwinn Fastback/Stardust: not a folder, but in the same class as a Raleigh 20

A couple of weeks ago I picked up the blue Stardust in the picture below from Craigslist, set it up for riding, and started doing some research. These bikes are Schwinn Stingrays, but have straight-tube frames, larger diameter, skinnier 451 wheels, and were built for performance. They seem to lend themselves to mods ala the Raleigh 20. I've already seen several modified versions, including the use of new alloy 451 rims, campy hubs, upgraded brakes etc. Primo Comets and Schwalbe Stelvios can be had in 1-1/8 or 1-3/8" sizes to match the rims. My Stardust came with an SA AW 3-spd., with 46x16 gearing (which I changed to 46x20), and a French hub on the front. The hubs and rims are drilled for 28 spoke lacing, somewhat unusual, but there are wheels available. Boy's version (Fastback) came with 5-spd. derailleur and bar mounted stick shift, and is somewhat more collectible than the girl's Stardust. Fixer-uppers can be had in the $100 to $200 price range.

Sweet rides! I've had thoughts of hotrodding a Raliegh Chopper in a similar vein but I'd probably get lynched by the orthodox UK fanbase for such 'non-stock' sacrelege..
