Backpack design: Anyone?
Now that my search for the compact fold is done and I am 100% happy with my Brompton-Merc bikes, I was thinking about a backpack design, or some other practical method to carry the folded bikes with you (not necessarily under perfect circumstances). Does anybody here have any interesting ideas on how to put together a backpack?

In a fairly recent edition of A to B magazine, a chap converted his rucksack in order to accommodate a Brompton. It seemed to work well..

It used to be that you could buy a bare external frame pack frame. Kelty still makes external frame packs. The bags can be removed and the bare frame used.
In the past I have used bare external frame back frames, with some customized bags and straps for canoe trips. The frame was customized with a big open nylon pocket. All the dry bags and other assorted equipment could be strapped to the frame and carried over portages. If there is interest I will try and track down a photo.
You might not even have to put a pocket on a bare frame for a folding bike. Just have straps to strap the bike to it.

Channell Wasson used to sell them, but I don't see them on his site anymore.
The U.S. Birdy distributor just jacked up the price because he probably read you were looking for some.
Here's his dealer list.
