Birdy: 15 second fold
http://www.kinetics.org.uk/assets/mu.../birdfold.mpeg |
Nice idea for a thread... Kudos!
This is a bit tenuous (as you can't see the bike) - but this is me going down the hill from my house on the way to work last year with my Ixus clamped to the bars of my Twenty using my trusty Manfrotto clamp. Getting about 32mph there - my best (pre-fixie) was 39 but that was plain scary! I want to see a timelapse of a build from bits to completed bike :) |
@LittlePixel
Nice vid. 32mph - spin faster, man! You ride close to parked cars - right in the "door corridor"; I would try and give stationary vehicles a wider berth. Sorry for critiquing your road positioning and sounding like a bike-safety pedagogue, but, believe me, a "dooring" is something best avoided... |
Hey James - good thread - I learned more from these vids than most places, and the camera is impartial and doesn't lie :) ... THANKYOU ...
Hey Pixel - very nice vid !!! ... I agree, you do ride damn close !! scares me !! ... I'd go road centre when really hacking it - just to improve viz (unless next to a Q ... then up outside if stationary, or inside if not...... scary when stationary Q moves tho :) ) BTW how did you get such a smoooth video ? did you have image stabilisation ? .... Even on my fully suspended MTB the bars would be moving up and down more than that.... I know you have damn fine front suspension on that 20 .... but hey ???? |

This thread is great. Very helpful for understanding the different folding mechanisms. I was considering getting a mobiky, but I might get a strida instead now.

@ Fear & Trembling & Simple Simon. I think it seemed closer than maybe it actually is for a few reasons; the camera was clamped on the left hand bar so has a little bias; It's at bar height not head height so the cars seem parallel rather than below, and the wide angle was 'zoomed.
I will admit I do ride *fairly* close (probably just over a foot from the kerb and maybe 2 feet from parked cars - but I have also have 4400 time-slowing ability and have not yet had a close 'dooring' incident. I've seen some in the making but so far got out of the way in time. My girlfriend rides further out and it's all about what you're comfortable with but to be honest I don't like being out that far and would far prefer to be on guard for the occasional 'door opening possibilty' than the constant stress of having impatient Londoners revving to get past. I also don't think it promotes great driver/rider relations being 'in their way' as they would see it. I ride a lot of roads with bus-lanes and I go centre lane a lot then so I'm not a total nihlist. I'll probably change my tune when the big door happens tho :) As for the footage - no special damping (other than those £10 forks). The clamp is quite heavy and just clamps like a gripping hand to any tube. It's not so great but it's watchable. Someone should build a mini-steadycam for bikes. They would rock! |

James - This is a great Post/thread.
