There was a used Dahon for sale at my LBS with the same exact indentation. I asked the salesperson about this and he said the older Dahons used to have this indentation so that the handlepost could nest in it (tighter fold). I was skeptical too, but after seeing this bike with the exact same thing, I'm more inclined to believe its true.
