any of you folding fixie owners use brakeless skids or skips to stop? how well do folders skid? for some reason i feel like they should skid easier than full-size bikes. just curious.

No i do not use skids.I ****** the pedals to stop.My fixed gear is held on by loctite so i am not comfortable using skids.

is it a suicide hub? if your cog is on solid and has locktite on it, you should be able to skid to your hearts content. i'd still keep a *****-brake on if i were you tho, just because even the best equipment can fail.
i'm still looking for a decent folding frame to build up, but once i get building, i think i'm just going to use oldschool bmx wheels and throw a fixed cog on. i've busted 2 lockrings off already on my full sized fixie, so i'm starting to think they don't really make things that much more secure anyhow.

Yes i have brakes on both ends on one only on the front on the other ,still i never use skids.I have a Dahon getaway which I am going to convert to a fixie. I was going to go the high dollar route but with benefit of your experience I may go the cheaper route of a bmx wheel loctite and a fixed cog.

I spotted this in a friends house. Unfortunately he has many bikes of different styles and I haven't seen him ride this one. I'll have to ask him about it for you.

it seems like it should work fine... especially on a bike with smaller/lighter wheels. i have not done this yet myself, but i'm sure enough about it to say that it will be the way my bike gets set up when i get it.
either way i'm going to have a front brake. i have had a couple bad equipment failures before that would have ended very badly if it was not for that brake.
if you try it out, post and let us know how it worked for you.

wow! thanks for posting that. that's friggin sweet! is that a downtube? he did a really nice job with it! if you can, find out what kind of rims he has on that. they look nice and thin. i'm torn right now between thin alu rims and blingy bmx rims... hmmmm

I think they were "Alex" brand. You might be able to spot the gold anodized spoke nipples (? is that what you call them)

Was randomly searching database for converting a downtube folder to a fixie - wasn't clear if you had seen this done - have you? I'd love to convert my folder to a fixie.
