I bought a 2006 Dahon Speed D7 last January and since I got it, I have had problem with the handlebars slipping when the temperature changes. Sometimes they will slip to vertical when I'm riding, and that's pretty scary. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Don't know the answer but have a question for you. I was looking at the Speed D7 2006 model on ebay and couldn't tell whether the handlebar height is adjustable or not, also what is the true folded size and true weight with everything on it? Thanks.

You've indicated that you do not have the adjustable handlepost.
Your comment about "slip to vertical" has me puzzled.

I consider myself myself a bit of an armchair expert on Dahon handleposts but your description puzzles me.

To fold up my bike, I have to loosen the handlebars so that they rotate upwards (i.e. the brake levers flip up 90 degrees to point at the sky) There's a little quick release lever in the middle of the bars that I lift to do this.

I have a '06 Speed 7 and I know what you are referring to. I have to losen the same QR if I want a compact fold by turning the handle bar.

whats wrong with tightening the quick release ? There is very little force to make them turn ( unless you do bunnyhops ) maybe they need a good cleaning as well... but they shouldnt slip at all..

Agree with Thor, should be pretty simple to solve - never had that problem on our 2005 Boardwalk D7s in the 2 1/2 yrs we had them (same handle bar design as the 2006 Speed 7).

ALL the QRs (Quick Releases) need periodic adjustment, as do the latches on the frame and stem riser.

There's nothing wrong with it, except that if it's tight when I start riding and five minutes later it's loose again and I don't realize, they could slip at a dangerous time.

Quick releases don't usually come loose. Could you describe how you are tightening it?

there is something fishy here..... As I said earlier that quick release is only holding the handlebar and preventing it from sliding or turning ... Nobody pulls on a handlebar from the side ( like pulling an arm out of a socket) or twisting the handlebar like a motorcycle.... except if somebody put a Triathlon extension or 3 feet long bar ends on it ???
It doesnt come loose by itself ....and why should it come loose in a dangerous time ( versus a peaceful time ???? ) I would think that ANY time something "becomes"loose its pretty dangerous ....

Something rubs me wrong with this, as if some lawyer is fishing for a lawsuit, where there is nothing ...

Its time to bring the bike to a dealer and have him explain how a quick release works ( and have him adjust it for you )

Like the people that simply use the QR lever as a spinner to tighten up the axles, but never throw the lever?!?

I've seen this at community clinics, where kids can bring in their bike for inspection/repair. If you ever get the chance to do this, I recommend it. What you see some kids riding will stand your hair on end.

I did local family rides where up to 300 people showed up .... WOW . Had the local police close roads .. and I did bike safety clinics at them.... lifted 100's of roadmaster and Huffy bmx up my stand and put reflectors on and checked them...
did that for a couple years until the city... but thats another story

Anyhow ..yes it is unbelivable what you can see ....lol

Thor..I tend to agree with your assessment as well (btw, thanks for the followup on the other issue I noted on the Dahon boards....this sounds like the seat post that keeps sliding down problem.....LOL)

I don't have a problem with the handle bar QR becoming lose while riding. When I fold the bike, I need to loosen the QR to keep the brake levers from getting in the way and rubbing against the wheels and to keep a neat compact fold. A QR becoming lose while riding is completely an adjustment or manufacturing
issue that require immediate attention by a Dahon LBS.
