I had a Denim a 18" er 20...I converted it to a chopper. No hassle from the bottom of the frame. But it kept on breaking spokes...in an old shimano 3 speed wheel. The Commando is a sort of boys version. No downtubes on there Got a couple of RSWs and they have some ugly sheet metal bracing. Also I want the 20 to be light weight. So might loose 50grams or so if I remove the tubes Just remember that those dts were put there for a good reason ie: frame strength and rigidity, even though the NZ bikes came without them....something about Kiwi uniqueness? I would leave them there and go for lightweight comps as 50 grams is not much saving in the overall scheme of things. You could experiment with it by charging down some mountain with fully loaded panniers putting the frame under extreme stress and see if it survives without the dts, but I recommend against this. My R-20 is used for commuting, bunch rides and now some touring and I don't nurse it, so the dts are staying put....that's my 2cents worth. |
The frame totals a monstrous 5kg or so. I have given up trying to get light weight out of the R20. Now I load it down for the sake of a workout.
|
yeah Im no lightweight either.
would be used for jetting about....tarmac and muddy tracks might even commute to work....but thats 20 miles away. so will probably leave frame alone. |
I got some bits for the 20. I ordered them through work.
I got a brake roller thing. I thought it was to enable me to use old style levers with V brakes. Ive got a sidepull brake on the back just now..a Weimmann 1080. Same as I have on the back of my Gold bike a Raleigh Phaser kids bike from the 70s....that Ive converted to a MTB. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...goldbike-1.jpg The back brake on that and now the one on my 20 feels horrible. V brake levers pull a lot more cable. So the lever doesnt move much....just feels solid....and theres not much ***********....admittedly Ive got old pads on...but its hopeless....also tough on my hand. I put a bracket to hold the cable...so I can use a cantilever brake on my suspension forks, on Gold bike http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...dbikebrake.jpg Got another bracket, so might do the same to my 20. Seen them in the catalogue too, there £8 Heres a pic of the 20. With that roller thing on the V brake. But Ive took it off and put a 135degree noodle, and V brake levers. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...35/20grass.jpg Ive changed the gear shifter too. The trigger couldnt select first gear. As the lever would hit the straight bars. Fitted a twist grip. Some shoppers came with them. Couldnt find a cable as long. it works, but I would like a bit more length... :-) Heres what I did to make the trigger work. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...bsatrigger.jpg Strapped the cable to the bars. Then grab the shifter to change |
Alecw35 - What fork did you use on your bikes? I'm still trying to make an RST fork work on my R20. How did you get such a long steerer on the BSA20? It appears to be threaded. Is that the case?
|
I love my Phillip's Twenty... there is still much I want to do but she's a nice ride in any weather.
(obligatory pic) http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/phillips20b.jpg |
Yeah I said before that I cut the head stock at the top...down to 4.2" Then fitted suspension forks of a kids bike. I fitted a riser tube thing, I got it on a Ladies MTB that I was given, sold that bike after that. I have seen one of these riser tubes on Ebay.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...cw35/riser.jpg Might change the stem. I like the one in there. Had it on my black MTB years ago. I have Specialized alloy MTB bars. So might fit a Specialized stem, its very simmilar to that stem though |
I was watching a TV show called Empty
Is a BBC Scotland comedy show. this week the main star...Gregor Fisher was cycling a BSA 20 at the end of the episode. He was getting harrassed by a man in a car I looked at BBCs website...but it doesnt have the clip http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/empty/ The afternoon Tea clip has the loud MC rapper he was the man in the car. theres 2 episodes on Youtube have to wait for that one |

For those of you that are allowed to use the amazingness that is the new BBC iPlayer to try and catch this moment - it might be still on there. For those that can't (ie non license payers..) - here's a screen-cap of an R20 in the recent(ish) hit movie 'The History Boys' hiding in the background like a shrinhking violet.
I've been waiting ages for an excuse to post this image... :) |
I'm up to two Twentys right now and would not be surprised if more found me...
I suspect that here in Canuckistan, that Phillip's Twentys were sold far more than their Raleigh counterparts as I have never seen an R 20 or BSA 20 here. It is good that I am fond of little gold bikes with Lion's heads emblazoned on the head badges and I just had to build a pocket rocket this week. I have been pricing out 451 parts as I want to build up a new wheelset using the SA hub in the rear and a Normandy high flange hub up front. This was a bone stock Twenty on Monday evening when I started tinkering... http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/P20roadie3.jpg |

I have a twenty frame I'm tempted to put the parts off the healing onto, as the twenty has a maintube that is slightly longer than the Healing. Attachment 67333 Attachment 67334 |
Yeah heres the link for the Iplayer
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/it...n_pid=b009g7fs Says its only on for a few more days |
Ive been building up a folding bike.
Is a Hercules compact. I was given it. Thought it was a horible Bianca clone. I widened the rear end with a scaffold pole against the seat tube...for a 7 speed 406 20" wheel The frame is badly made. The chainstays are hardly welded to the BB shell. Theres big gusset plates there. The BB seems ofset to one side. The BB takes normal cups. I fitted a Solida alloy crank the same as my 20 has. Was the first out of the box. Havent put brakes or cables on it. Going to see if I can get the weight low enough so I can carry it on the bus. See if I can get a bag for it. |
My neighbour just gave me 2 bikes.
A modern cheap ladies MTB And a Raleigh ladies roadster that has stainless wheels. Was wanting a set of them. She also had the Raleigh version of the Hercules Compact...but its someone elses She had 2 lighter folders in the loft too. But cant get up there Dont know what they were. I geuss I could restore the old roadster...is a Hub date of 49 8 But I'll just rip the wheels for my Hercules Balmoral. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...5/Balmoral.jpg I had a Balmoral when I was a kid I swapped some old engines for a load of old bikes, about a year ago Got the Balmoral and a tandem in the deal |
Hey Ive been messing with my welder.
Been trying to get the hang of it so I can mod my bikes So Ive been melding tubing cut from scrap bikes. I thought try to make some actual thing. So I got a mtb stem thats been bashed a bit I cut the stem in too in the middle of the extension tube Got a tube and put the 2 bits in there. welded it up. didnt even measure it Its an experiment so when I put my welding gear away....I measured it.... 180mm extension. oh well fit a real short frame |
was trying to build up my Hercules compact.
Id widened the rear end to take 20" 406 wheels that have 7 speed freewheel on them. I measured the drop for the brakes..around 80mm. good I can use some of my weinmann 810 brakes. I got a brake from a box..cleaned it up a bit. Then built it as a front, with stainless nuts and washers. I got a pair of roadster type alloy bars. Tried to fit alloy weinmann levers to it, very difficult. The rear needed a longer brake. So I looked in another box. There was a bag with a polished 890 brake arms in it, I had polished them a while ago. I built that into a rear brake. Fitted it to the bike. But couldnt find a cable long enough. Was trying to fit white cables. Re-using bits Id stripped from other bikes. Geuss I'll have to buy a cable. But can only get black from my shop. I looked for a gear shifter. Couldnt find a 7 speed lever. Found a Grip shift. Dont like them, but tried it anyway. It wouldnt fit..grrrr. The bars are a bit thicker diameter. Have to look for that 7 speed thumbie. Or could just put a 6 speed on there. Also Ive got a Shimano 105 6 speed uniglide hub with 2 cassettes. I got it for my dirt cross. But It could go in the Compact. The quick release clamps on the headset and the seat post are not playing the game. I took them off and cleaned them up. But the stem and the seat pin move in them. Maybe Ive got too much copper grease in there. Dont think so. The stem is the original one. I could put a proper stem in, Ive got a SR stumpneck. But want to be able to fold this bike, with out tools |
I see that YST make a threadless Bottom bracket
so you dont have to mess with getting Phill wood cups or rettapping they seem to be in 110mm to 122mm but the ones Ive seen are only for 68mm wide shells. http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwP...c003151c003226 YST also have the One peice bb shell to 3 peice BB axle. Like I fitted to my /city Boy folding bike. Got a nice looking one with sealed bearings and alloy cups. Also seen a brand called Pristine. Its a 70 mm shell width. So might fit right in there. http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-0...eads-16505.htm |

http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/P20roadie3.jpg I re-tapped the bb so I could install a cartridge bb and run my vintage Stronglight cranks with the flip flop (fixed/fixed) rear hub, and decided the 406 wheels and tyres were perfect for urban assaults as they roll fast and absorb the bumps really well. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...ronglight2.jpg[/QUOTE] This is one of my favourite bikes. |
Im wanting a fixed hub for a road bike Im building.
have been watching some on ebay. But Im a tight Scotsman, so dont want to spend to much. :D Im going to a second hand bike shop near my work today. If I remember. Theres a couple of young men that are from there, on a placement at my work. One said that he could get the bike Im wanting on his discount. I got my City Boy folder there for £5. So hopefully they will have a road bike with a fixed wheel, and the Mk3 Chopper he mentioned. |
I and Scottish and Irish which means I love to drink but hate to pay for it...
The flip flop hub on my Twenty is a double sided BMX hub that I converted to fixed. |
I have heard of people using fixed cogs on normal hubs with bottom bracket lockrings on there.
Im not wanting to do stunts on the bike, But dont want it to be undoing itself. Is it ok to use it like that? Ive got some SA screw on sprockets that I was going to try on a Maillard hub that Ive built onto a steel 27" rim. I respaced it, and redished it so the threaded part is near the drop out. Anyway. I went to the second hand bike shop. I got a mint condition Hercules Balmoral 3 speed roadster, in green. I mentioned my hercules before. There was a ladies Balmoral there to, it matched, but was rusty. I got a Dawes touring bike. Small frame with okish parts on it. Large flange hubs on 27" alloys. A Raliegh Explorer. I think thats what it said. A 3 speed roadster with a humped top tube, like my gold bike. But this has 26" wheels. Well a front one anyway. I got a ladies Royal Enfeild 3 speed roadster for spares. I checked the wheels for corrosion. 74 9 date. They will fit on my Explorer. I got a Raleigh ladies Clubman mixte road bike. Its a 531 frame with Campag gears. I will use the parts on the Dawes. That came to £50 for the lot. I took them to my work. I stripped the mudguards and wheels from the Royal Enfeild and the Explorer. I got those parts back on the bus. The frames will get brought back in my folding bikes bag. As its big enough for a normal frame. |
It really depends on whether you're going to be braking hard with the pedals. If you're running with no brakes, I'd definitely suggest not doing it. If you've got brakes, and aren't given to skidding or hard back-pedalling, you might try it. Fixed hubs are pretty cheap these days though (given they bikes you have, I'd bet you have an old flip-flop hub with a lockring thread on it somewhere; they were VERY common on 50's/60's road bikes, and I've had 3 or 4 in my time)
|
I built up a old Rudge frame with a fixed wheel years ago.
with a front brake. it had rusty rims and a bent crank. so it sawed through a set of brake pads in a day....and my legs I dont have a fixed hub. That one I had was likely to be a 40 spoke. not got many rims with that many holes. Maybe a couple of stainless rims...too heavy. I might go to the bike shop and search there wheel pile. Its a pyramid about 40 feet across and 15 feet high. Im wanting a Raleigh Chopper I was told they had. Also might get a Peugeot racer for its 700c wheels and aero levers. They had a Raleigh All Steel to. But it was more All Rust. And looked about 23". Too big |
Im getting chucked out of my house. So all of my stuffs going. Most of its getting chucked to the dump. Will get my bikes to the scrap yard, so can weigh them in for cash.
Im keeping some bikes back. My 20s might apear on ebay. If my friend will do that for me. Will give him most of the cash. I showed him my Campag Athena cranks and mechs, and a 56 tooth chain ring. My box of various Jagwire pads. An SR blue bmx seat pin in its bag. And a 1541 commodore disc drive. I forgot about the Campag BB and tool I have. Will be other stuff too. Going to cut out the SA AG hub from the BSAs original wheel. Its a 28 spoke hub. So is easier to build into modern rims. My other AG hubs are 40 hole. I was gonna build it into a 406 alloy rim. Its got good voltage. |
Ive been messing with pics trying to get them on the Raleigh 20 site. But no joy. I cropped a pic down to under 600 wide. Still wouldnt take the photo.
So Ive uploaded more pics to photobucket, that I havent shown before http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...w35/bsa202.jpg I had done some work on the bike. I had ripped the rear wheel to bits, then rebuilt it. Took the plastic tray off the carrier. Put the light in a hole on carrier, the bracket had broken. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../bsa20left.jpg left side of bike http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../bsa20bull.jpg After I modded the frame I fitted suspension forks and Solida racer cranks. I tried an SR stumpneck stem and bull bars. bit low and close though. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...35/bsa2034.jpg left 3/4 veiw when bull bars were still on it My RSW. I think Ive got a thread on this. Well heres the bike on this thread. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...withalloys.jpg I took bike to work and recut the fork and BB threads to the normal pitch. I built 3 speed 20 spoke alloys for it. I drilled the stem to run the cables in the forks. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...5/rswfront.jpg Showing the cables coming out of the forks. The front cables too long. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../rswcables.jpg The other cables only reach out of the frame tube and no more. There 2 metre cables. I guess its about a metre from handle bar to fork crown, then another metre to the seat tube, with the wiggly bit out of the forks. I know I could use an inline adjuster and more outer cable. But 3 speed cable would be difficult to get long enough |
The wheels I had built for the RSW were from a Raleigh Max kids bike, I got from a charity shop for £6.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/Alecw35/max.jpg there single speed though. I had got another kids bike from the dump with mangled 16" wheels that had 20 spokes and a 3 speed hub. I cant remember what it was called. It was white with a square shifter that had a lever and a button on it. Those are rubbish. I put the shifter on my blue Falcon. It stopped working when going to town. I smashed it off the bars. :/ I had got another donnor bike from the charity shop. It was also £6. It was a dual suspension Y frame. I still have the wheels from it. The bike frame was in my big fire. :( I rebuilt the front wheel last night while watching the TV. It had anodising on it. So sanded the brake tracks smooth. And polished up the other parts with a brillo wire wool pad in soapy water. Looks nice. Was thinking I could build a Dynohub or drum brake hub into the other rim. I still have a few 40 spoke rear hubs. Not tried to build mismatched rims and hubs. Ive heard that SA brought out the S3B small diameter drum brake for small wheels. Well Ive got a couple of them from RSWs. But there 28 spoke, and my alloys are 20. As for getting a better spoke line with a smaller hub. Well Ive had RSWs with full size drum brakes and dyno front hubs. |
I looked out the window this morning and the wooden board and wheel that were in front of my BSA 20, RSW, silver and gold Raleigh Phasers and Raleigh Cruiser, was lying on the grass. I stared hard through the early morning gloom and realised that some ones stolen my Chrome BMX. :( Hey Ive had 30 bikes on the grass for a few weeks and the theives turn up when there nearly all away. The BMX was frame, forks, chain and wheels. No bars or brakes. Just a cheap bike anyway. Had most of the bits in the garage for it.
I gave most of the bikes away to the second hand bike shop. And have given a lot of stuff to a neighbour that sells things at the car boots sales...er swap meets. I went downstairs and there was a note from him that he had seen an Albanian walking through the village with a silver bike and other things. He was walking his dog in the early morning. It might not have been an Albanian. Theres a lot of foreign workers at the factory and the farms. I had heard kids shouting yesterday evening. They have stolen things from my yard before. As Ive seen them riding about on my bikes. Later today my neighbour came round to see me. He was up for going to find my bike. Im just not bothered. I looked on the grass and theyve taken a couple of stainless steel jugs that I had. Used to store stuff in them. I dont think the kids would have taken them. My sister Janet was out again. She took over a tonne of scrap metal away. She had wanted the stainless steel containers. She took all my hubs and spokes that I had outside. Along with 50 or so wheels. I was going to clean up the 16" rear wheel. To match the one I did last night. But some spokes are rusty. Doh. Got rid of all my spare spokes. Or have I? I have the spokes from some RSW and 20 wheels that I stripped last week. And theres a 9 speed MTB wheel that I was goning to strip for hub and cassette, to ebay. Its got chain gouging on the spokes. But only need 20 spokes for the 16" alloy. There stainless spokes too. Ive got a spoke threading machine. |
I had a look at the 16" rear wheel. Its cog is the 2 pin remover type. I broke mine years ago. Just use a hammer and chisel on a faceplate hole. I tried it. But had my big chisel and it wouldnt go in hole enough. So I thought that the cogs rear rusty. So put chisel to its tooth and hit it. The freewheel spun off the hub. :o Guess that cogs for the scrap yard too.
|
I found a pic of my R24 when it had 20" wheels
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../chopped20.jpg I had cut the headstock and the BB then. I fitted a BMX mag wheel and a MTB deep V rim to the front. On the forks I now have on my BSA twenty. I was wanting to build a chopper then. Hence the big bars. Whats happened to Photobucket? It takes ages to get to my album. Then it wouldnt copy the image address bit. Had to go back 3 times to get the image. GRRRR |
1973 Raleigh Twenty
Picked this up from an old Englishman today. Actually in pretty decent shape. Just needs a good cleaning and some attention to the brightwork. I love that it has the original (and working) hand pump. Just need to find a chain guard. I think I did well for $75.
