Anybody using a wireless speedometer with their folder?
 

I just picked up a Cateye Micro, but the instructions say the unit needs to be within 70cm (~27") of the transmitter. With my Dahon Mu P24, that means it won't work from my handlebars. I'm thinking about mounting it on the bar post or perhaps on the frame, but neither of those options make for easy reading. Are there any units that have a longer range? How are you guys, if any, using a wireless unit with your folders?

I'm using one on my Merc. It works fine.

Yes, several. Try it and see if it works mounted normally. Mine did. I have Cateye Stradas. The problem I have is that my LED torch interferes with it.

Have a Cateye Vectra on a Dahon, but the same 70cm thing. I recall measuring the distance and it being just over or just under 70cm, but it does work. If the bike shop will refund you if it doesn't work, you can always put the transmitter and the computer in position (but not tie them down) and spin the front wheel to check. Or get a Topeak X'tender or something (had the Minoura Space Grip before, by the way, but prefer this - no plastic chrome and much more configurable).

Just done my first 100 miles on the new bike, so really happy...

I just mounted a Filzer on my Birdy and it seems to work fine.

I use the Strada too, good range. I have one on my Dahon Curve, the MU P24 and my Hardrock.

NOW I understand why it's been acting flaky since I parked a 1W LED light next to it on my handlebar...

I've just put a Sigma BC1606L DTS on my Bianchi / Birdy and it seems fine so far

' tried wireless speedometer before. Too many interferences.....I just gave up and went back to wired. ' never looked back. Well, maybe someday when the design goes more advance I'll try it again.

There seems to be a diff in performance b/t the cheapos and the better ones. But it can go wonky if another bike with wireless rides beside you and if you have metal objects like water bottle cage on your handle bars. Also, if you use a bar bag, that may affect it too. I use a Cateye Microwireless.

I prefer traditional wired ones for supreme reliablity despite the ugly wiring...

I've done wired twice. Both times I inadvertantly chopped the wire when folding. Wireless works great.

I use a Garmin Fortrex 101 on both of my folders. Works very well for speed, distance, elevation, & total time running. Even has a "bread crumb" trail and route taken can be downloaded later and over layed on a map or satellite picture.

It will mount on your wrist or handle bar (has very secure bike mount). ....And it plugs into our laptop and will interface with Microsoft's 'Streets and Trips' map program where it acts just like a GPS system - minus an annoying voice.

It was something like $130. online, and can also be purchased at REI.

NOTE: The 'SCREEN' shown below is the one I usually have up when riding, but several others are possible.

Garmin Edge 305 works fine (Helios P8)
basic CatEye also works fine (Speed P8)

Lots of positive remarks, I'm optimistic! I'll try it out, tomorrow, or this weekend. If it doesn't work, I might "have to" splurge on one of those tiny Garmins, someday.

Bike Friday makes an adapter that fits around the stem of their bikes (but that should work for any folder) on which you can mount a computer to put it closer to the wheel. It's basically a little perch attached to a clamp; you can find it here:
