Dahon downtube grabby brakes?
Hi all,
Go easy on me, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to bike mechanics. I bought a Downtube 8 back in 2006, rode it a few times and it ended up in storage until today. The front brakes seem grabby to me. It's rideable but pedaling seems more labored than it ought to be. And the bike doesn't roll back and forth very easily. Is this normal? The brake pads seem tight to the tires. I adjusted the tension screw to see if that would make a difference but it didn't. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Eddie

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

I'm confused. Dahon and Downtube are different companies.

If you have no apptitude yourself, and you just want a bike to ride, why not take it to your local bike shop and ask them to sort it out, or at least get all the basic functions working normally ?

Brake blocks too close to wheel rims. Screw the adjuster on cable or brake IN to achieve small gap between blocks and rim (1-2mm or so) . If you can't achieve that either the cable slack needs adjusting slightly by loosening the cable grip screw - then readjust the tensioner.
Or - the brake is off centre if it's the sort of brake that can go off centre and the blocks are rubbing. Just make sure you do the cable grip screw up properly if you loosen it.
Brakes shouldn't rub - full stop.
