Managed to get an afternoon to myself and took off to ride around Derwentwater in the UK Lake District. The lake is only about 45minutes from my home (by car) so I took my Xootr Swift with me. First picture is the Newlands valley, slightly overcast but dry.

Up above Derwent Water looking across the lake towards the town of Keswick (Kez-ick). A very nice way to spend an hour and a half.

Yep; I put the Schlumpf Speed Drive on it, and it increased the versatility of the bike enormously, with 510% gear range. XT hub and derailer, and the cockpit size is just right. Thudbuster with butchered Brooks saddle busts the thuds. It helps that the handlepost is the older, more reliable steel version which is stiffer. Folds reasonably small. The bike is close to being the perfect bike. :thumb:

Those Lake District pics are very nice indeed. Great too to see Jur & Missus spending quality time on the saddle, on their impressive bikes.

May I share some poodling shots in the historical city of Malacca, West Malaysia. This city was occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch and British and they have each left their imprint on this living museum of a city.

Can you guess the two foldies in the background?

again, three more great sets of pootle pics - gladdens my heart as I look at them rather than completing the project I am at my desk at 7 am to finish.

Isn't it one of those rare Grindley-Patterson Safety Bicycles from 1942? Double reciprocating cam-followers, with revised trunnions?

Yes, I'm sure it is.

Nice pix everyone.

It's from Smart and is a battery light which fits their bracket designed that bolts to the fork crown. Smart are about the only light manufacturer that appear to make this type of bracket - very handy. The one on the handlebar is a "Photon" that has a "normal" beam and LED setting.

That Chendol looks awesome...should be easy to make, and most of the ingredients are available at our local groceries...very tempting indeed in this summer heat.

oldies the pacific carryme a decent bike?

OldiesONfoldies 07-22-08 05:43 PM

Hi What bike, the CM is indeed a very decent bike esp for short trips (2-4km) and jumping in and out of trains/buses. IMO, its the best bike for multi-modal commuting due to its 8kg weight and super compact fold. It rides better than it looks, cruises easy at 18kmh with its 48" gear range. Its ability to carrry luggage is amazing too.

Downsides - its 8" wheels does not roll as well as 16" ones and ride is a bit harsh understandably. Also, beware of potholes and metal covers on roads. Rider limited to 85kg.

This is a very specialized/specific bike that is not everyone's cup of tea but I've found the CM simply opens a new paradigm for foldies. Its waaaaaaaaaaay better than the A-bike too. I once needed to take along 2 bikes with 5 people's luggage in a small Toyota Vios 1.5 sedan for a trip around N Thailand. The CMs were the only foldies that could do the job!

Hello from Belgium,

Here are a couple of images from Domein Bokrijk, a huge park in the Limburg region. It is a cyclists paradise. Miles and miles of bike-only paths through the middle of a forest. Before packing up my bike I replaced the Stelvios with Big Apples, owing to the mixed surfaces I knew I would encounter - pavement, gravel, cobblestone. I am very pleased with that decision. The Big Apples are great.

How about Montana/Idaho USA. This was a fun adventure only possible with a folding bike.

Waiting for the bus. There is a narrow road through a canyon that is just to dangerous for a bike, but luckily there is a bus that makes that trip. Fold her up and go.

OldiesONfoldies 07-25-08 09:13 AM

Looks like you had lots of fun Loch. Montana is beautiful. I like the snow cap mountains, and its summer? Say, what tires do you have on the Pro? Notice the dual chain ring too. Nice :)

Loch 07-25-08 11:32 AM

Yes it's finally Summer, snow is melting fast now!

I'm running Primo Comet Kelvar 20x1.5, so far I really like them.

CS - Nice report from Belgium! Those boreal forests always seem more enticing than ours. Any more pics?

snafu21 07-30-08 12:43 PM

Not much pootling going on. V. hot in the UK, 27C today, but hopped down to the coast to feed the tame hovercraft at Lee On The Solent:

It's about 9 miles back to temporary home with g/f, so it's a nice workout. If I'm not doing that I'm loitering in the woods with the Matrix, looking for pixies..

http://i35.tinypic.com/1z6gpv.jpg

Very quiet there in the mornings, I get a 12-13 mile run from Wickham to Droxford and back on the old Meon Valley railway line. This route is where my fascination with horse-poo comes from. There's a very slight gradient to the line, so going to Droxford I slog along at 12 mph, coming back it's a blitz at 18-20mph. Sometimes there is mud, and I fall off, or interact with trees. Like the Blair Witch Project, I never know if I'm going to get home in one piece...

http://i34.tinypic.com/2hcos9j.jpg

The Matrix likes mud. Yummy. But then it has to wait patiently while I take on water and buns for the return leg home.

http://i37.tinypic.com/j0f8tj.jpg

Finally, if you missed it the first time round, here's what the bike and I are covered in after most of these little rides into the countryside..

Are you training for the triathlon Snafu? Running and cycling, where do you hide the Matrix? Is the horse poo camoflauge?

How did you manage to cycle the orange bike and the Matrix at the same time Wonderwoman?
