big apples, brakes & installation ?
Since I got a new speed p8 I decided to put some big apples on my boardwalk s1. It was a little hard getting the old tires off, but not to bad. Very simple putting the big apples on. I thought it might be hard because of some posts about 20" tires beading properly. My problem came when trying to install with front brake. I took off one side and had a ******** of a time getting it back on with the spring and adjusting them. ( 2hrs) After words I thought I should have just loosened the wire.
Now my question is, in case of a flat on my speed 8 or boardwalk what's the easiest way to get the tire by the brake? Please help me save some future trouble. Sorry if this is a no brainer question. Thanks. |
if I am reading this correctly, inflate the tire when you get it back in

Or would just deflating the tire and squeezing it by the brakes work? Sometimes you have learn the hard way.

I didn't see the firsst part of the question, but IIRC the boardwalk has v-brakes....so you have to squeeze the 2 levers of the brakes together and slip the noodle(curved) thingy out of the brake holder
that allows the v-brakes to open and you are able to slide the wheel off....it is still a tight squeeze depending on the v-brake and how close it is adjusted also getting that noodle off the first couple of times is a pain...but eventually it gets easier |
Big Apples are BIG. I have to inflate after installing on all bikes. Including Vbrake ones such as the Mini.

The S1 should be a V-brake, yes? In which case, it has a quick release that should give you ample room to put in a Big Apple....

here's a picture of the upgraded Avid front V-brake on my S1. (There is normally no rear brake.) The tires on mine are 1.75" Tioga Pool Comp slicks. I haven't removed them since upgrading the brake, but would assume that Big Apples would not mount/de-mount without deflating them.
