Upgrading a Citizen Bike

Hi,
My parents bought two Citizen bikes a couple months ago. One being "The Tokyo," and the other "The Gotham." If I had known they were buying these, I would've helped them find a better quality one. But it's a bit too late. They've been sitting in the garage for the past 3 months untouched.

That being said.. it just doesn't feel smooth. I'm not sure how to explain it. Out of the box their was already a few problems with bent fenders. And twist grips just aren't my style.. but that's just me. Changing gears is very loud and clanky, but then again, I'm used to riding fixed or single speed.

I don't think they'd be happy if I bought them new bikes, but I'd rather fix these up and make them ride a bit nicer. Any tips?

Convert them to Sturmey Archer hub and put a set of puncture resistant tires? Or ride them like you stole ' em, then replace parts as they break.

Lube and adjust gears. Big Apple tires for comfort. Ergo grips. Get rid of the fenders. Comfort saddle.

I bought one of those things as my first folder and gave it away for free 6 months ago. The thing is not worth upgrading since the upgrades would cost more than the bike itself. See if they can sell it for half price on Ebay and then buy some good bikes.
