tire inflations

what is the benefit to inflating tires closer to their max pressure than to the minimal pressure as marked on the tire itself?

what makes a smoother ride?

more pressure lesser rolling resistance less comfort
less pressure ....reversed

Also, as I have discovered recently, low pressure means higher likelihood of pinch flats (where the tube gets torn because it's pinched between the tire and the rim).

I have a dilemma because people keep telling me that my old steel rims won't take pressures higher than about 40 psi, but the tubes and tires really need to be pumped up more than that to prevent flats.
