Ergon GR2 Grips
 

Everyone here has been so helpful in my research for a folder (got the mini), saddle (got the Flyer), now I ask for your expert advice on these Ergon GR2 grips I have my eyes on.

I am going to purchase this from the net as my LBS does not carry it and have the LBS install it.

Which version should I get for the mini:

- regular
- gripshift compatible
- rohloff, nexus, compatible

Is this something my LBS can install easily?

I asked this in another thread. Regular both are long, gripshift both are short, rohloff one is short which is probably what you want.

However, I haven't been able to find the rohloff version anywhere in the united states. People's solution has been to buy regular ones and cut one down to size with a hacksaw.

I wasn't a fan of the bar ends of the ergon grips. They seemed useless to me since they are so small. The only difference between the grip shift version and the regular version is the length and the price. You can easily cut the regular grips to the appropriate length to fit, plus if you only have one gripshift, you can just cut one of the grips instead of having two shortened grips.

Installing them isn't something that needs to be done at the LBS. You just remove the old ones (if you don't want them, just cut them off) and slide the new ones on, tighten the bolt and you are done. The only thing you'll have to do is adjust the angle of the grips.

Has anyone tried these Specialized grips that look like a cheaper alternative?

I put Ergons on my Rohloff'd Surly Big Dummy. I just cut down the right grip. It does look a bit ghetto, but as MJW points out I've never seen the Rohloff version [not that I've seen another Rohloff in town either!].

Love the Ergons BTW - I've got them on all my bikes save the ones with drop bars and my friends all have them now as well. It usually only takes one ride to convince people that they are a great idea.

LMAO...yes it's short, but that's all the room there is on a Titec H-bar with a Rohloff shifter. It actually works pretty good - too bad it looks so gnarly.

Do the specialized grips come with the right one shorter?

I dont' think so, but at that price I wouldn't be too concerned about chopping them to size.

I have the Ergon grips on my Rohloff'd Jetstream, and I love them. They give the largest measure of shock absorbing of any grips I've used. The Rohloff version wasn't yet offerered, and I bought the regular grips and cut the right one down for my Rohloff shifter. I cut the plastic inner tube with a saw, and cut the rubber grip with a matte knife, and it looks pretty tidy. It's not as severely docked as vik's. In his case, he was limited by the configuration of his welded-on bar end, which I think accounts for the apparent awkwardness of his setup.

iam, are you referring to these? They are the original GR2, with the "shark tooth" end.

I would agree that the vestigial bar ends of the original version are nearly worthless, but would think otherwise of the new version.

They come in Large and Small cushion sizes.
I have the short bar style. I have the long bar style on order.

The short bars are nearly, but not totally useless.

I took a fall. The short bar took the force and scrapes, instead my hand or brake lever.

I use the Rohloff version on my Curve but they are hard to come by. I fell and those bar ends too the fall for me too.

Planning to get a pair for my MU P24 soon.

What about the Cane Creek Ergo grip ends? Is that a comparible products? Easier to install.

Having used both the Ergon's are nicer and easier to fit. The Cane Creeks are quite comfy, though the grippy pattern is a bit over the top (I believe it's lots of little embossed lizards); Problem is the silicone rubber is too soft really and really succeptable to scrapes/bumps so it looks really ragged really quickly.

I put the ergon grips on my swift and then decided I wanted bar ends so I moved the ergon's inboard about 3/4 inch and added the cane creeks. It looks obsurd but is really quite comfortable.

I have Cane Creeks on my Mu P8 and Ergon GR2s on my Birdy and have had the same experiences.

I tried Ergons a few years ago when they were de regeur, now I prefer the offerings from BBB. Ergofix and Ergostix are very similiar to the Ergons, minus the hype and price. And if you're considering the Cane Creek barends, the Ergostix are just as nice although not as stylish.

Since the grip and barends are separate from (but designed to integrate with) the barends, the angle of the barends can be adjusted independently of the grip angle.

I got mine from a seller on Amazon here and here. I don't shill for them, in fact they can be a bit dicey, but they usually have rock-bottom prices on accessories.

The Ergon bar-ends' angle ARE adjustable independently of the grips.

I have the early version with the tiny bar-end; it is indeed close to worthless. Not only is it very short, but it is rather sharp on top so it cuts into the palm a bit. On aa few other bikes I use the BBB brip with normal barends, I find the BBB ones superior, they are softer so conform better, plus are cheaper. The ergo-stiks weren't cheap.

These "Ergon GC3 Grips With Composite Bar End" look more like a real bar-end. Anybody seen them in real already?

Ugh. I hate all these things. I miss the old original downtube shift levers, and for internal gears the old Sturmey-Archer trigger shifter.

FWIW: I *don't* think the little stubby ergon ends are worthless - they're good on a folder (esp a Brompton) as they don't interfere with the fold, and they do provide and nice alternative hand position when you want to get up in the bars. I only have tiny childlike hands though so this may be a contributing factor... :)

I didn't mean to imply the Ergons weren't adjustable. I'd originally followed my comment about the adjustable barend by saying I didn't know if the Ergon was adjustable or not, seems I lost that point in editting for brevity. Sorry if I trod any toes.

Don't know what they cost Downunder, but the Ergostiks barends are $21 USD +shipping from that seller on Amazon I linked to. Less than half the cost of the Cane Creeks.
