Raleigh Twenty spotting: Mike Leigh's 'Happy Go Lucky' movie

What a happy day when we watched the recent Mike Leigh movie 'Happy Go Lucky' only to find that the entire title sequence involves the main character—Poppy—pootling around London on her care-worn Twenty.

Sadly an event (all too often seen in London) soon afterwards means the bike doesn't make the second reel, but I thought I'd get some screen-caps to share a proper working Twenty out in the wild.

S'a good movie too. As are all his movies...
How about adding to this thread with other folders spotted on film and screen?

I can't find any screenshots, but was watching the 1960's "Les bicyclettes de belize" yesterday which not only begins but continues with the "hero" riding one of the smaller wheeled raleighs. It is not a film that has aged well with time shall we say, the whimsy being a bit wearing, and the only classic thing remaining is the bike. Maybe the Mike Leigh opening is an homage ???

D'you know what - I bought the reissue DVD of the very same just a few months ago but hadn't got round to watching it. Heh - what a hoot - we all need a little whimsy in our lives every once in a while! The influence is definitely there - definitely a homage of sorts, with the silly fop on his little gold Raleigh RSW 16 with white balloon tyres [aka a big advert for Raleigh]

I used to work in Hampstead - it's changed a bit though since the sixties... Still looks like a village!

laughing at my own typo - bicyclette de belize would be about South America - belsize. But a serious point, ish, is the intro to the sixties film, where the guy is riding/lifting his bike across the rooftops, is it points to why I like my downtube mini better than my mercton, is that it is more manouevrable when walking/lifting, like the fop does....

But your point about Hampstead changing is right, the reason I was watching this film and others likewise is I am really getting into the location shots of street life in the 50s and 60s... a lost world.

I just watched this movie. I liked the character but don't feel like anything actually happened in the movie. Was there any conflict and resolution? What do you think?

Fop leaves flat on bike.
Fop fannies about in hampstead (did he get lucky the night before perhaps?)
Fop has minor accident with wee lass on trike who then trails him like a bloodhound
Fop has no cycling skills and ends up with head buried in billboard for Raleigh Bikes, promoted by the lovely 'julie' (Can anyone say 'Diana Rigg?)
Fop obsesses about Julie. Buys a poster.
ZOMG! Fop Sees her IRL!.
Fop Stalks her around the Heath.
Fop sprays hypnotic pheromone in her general direction so she'll go for a walk and a smooch with him.
Trike girl is not happy bout this turn of events, wanting Fop for herself.
Trike girl's attentions are swayed by boy of more appropriate age.
Rides off into sunset.
The END

Haha. They don't make 'em like that any more!
