Unscrew the chain from your Sachs.. unscrew the rod from the SRAM .. try screwing the chain into the SRAM .. you'll see the problem .. not that it couldn't be worked out, I just put it on the back burner as I was going to do just that.. Birdy still advertises their Dual Drive as a SRAM on their website, and I see the drive side nut with pull chain coming out, so perhaps there is a commercial replacement for the clickbox.. if you find it, let us know.. beats the hell out of trying to cobb something up..

bhkyte 04-10-16 02:17 PM

Yes I have tries my sach in the sram. It does fit. I do have another toggle chain that sort of fits my sram. I dont know where I got it. I guess if the thread is right and its long enough to get out the hub it does not matter.
I will have a look. I had a LBS that had some really old stock years ago maybe I got it there. Never tired replacing the click box it, as I had a work around on my mezzo. I dont have a sram birdie. I do have s sash dual drive wheel I may fit in future.

Thanks guys. The chain setup will no doubt be more durable than that plastic clickbox. The little cover keeps dropping off. May be a possible mod.
I've found the gearing too low and have replaced the cassette and the RD to a road 105. Works OK but I suspect the chain needs to be narrower as it seems to snag and jumps two gears at the same spot. This change seems to have freed up bit more room for the fold. Once I have the replacement tyre on, I shall try and see if further fiddling is required. I may just add that Pacific chain tensioner for a neater fold.

i've had my SRAM DD for about 1.5 years, and the click box had never fallen off. quite surprised actually at how sturdy it is given the tales of woe out there...

Not the clickbox but the cover at the rear.

I'd like to add a front derailleur to the Brompton and thus need a ring to attach it to the frame.

The seat tube on the Brompton is 38.55mm.

Ridea tells me the following rings for the Birdy won't work on the Brompton: Is the seat tube on the Birdy much bigger/smaller?

Does anyone have an experience ordering online on BikeGang? (bikegang.ecwid.com)

Googeling I found this: "Fitting a front derailleur is quite easy. Steve Parry makes a front derailleur bracket, I fitted one to Mrs LWaB's Brompton about seven years ago to run double chainrings with the five speed hub. Channel Wasson in the USA makes a front derailleur bracket also. I'm not sure it is so necessary now that Brompton has a wide-range 2 x 3 system.

If you are starting from scratch, fitting front and rear derailleurs is doable. Google for Ultimate Folding Bike and Len Rubin. Don't expect it to be cheap, quick or easy. It is the opposite of all of them."

I see you like the Candy, Crank Brothers Candy. Nice.

No comment on the bike, except to say that the color combination with the saddle and grip looks good. How do you like those Brooks grips?

The owner of this bike is not posting here (I think). You need to contact him here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=3&theater

As far as I know the stem, posts and bars are interchangable. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I have a new and older Birdie.

desastar 08-25-16 04:21 PM

Thanks, are the headtube length the same for both versions? If so youll think they be the same.

Hi everyone, please advise me what crank set and bottom bracket from Shimano or SRAM is compatible to Birdy Alivio 9 Speed. Thanks.

I'm fairly sure any road bike crankset & BB will do the job.

foldingdroid 08-31-16 12:47 AM

Thanks a lot Jur, if possible only, please can you give me a specific model from Shimano or SRAM. I only want to replace the crank set and bottom bracket, and continue to use the stock alivio 9 speed cogs and rear derailleur. Is this possible?

Is this one OK? Shimano Alivio M4050 9 Speed Triple Chainset, but I do not know the length size, 165mm, 170mm or 175mm?

desastar 08-31-16 08:08 AM

foldingdroid......depends on what crankset you end up using as that determines what type of bottom bracket will go with it.

I have just replaced the original hardly used original square taper bb and cranks. I've installed a Shimano 105 hollowtech crank and bottom bracket, re-using the original 56T chainring. You need to learn about bottom bracket types, chainring bcd, etc. You definitely do not want a triple chainring....or do you??

This is also a 9 speed model. Excuse the optional "brown" chain, I will get to replacing it in due course. This is the condition of the bike bought last week.

Thank you very much Desastar for your input. Appreciate it. I am a new learner on cycling parts and components. You are right, I do not need triple chainring as I see it now. I will try also Shimano 105 to be on the safe side.

Looks like your bike is missing the rolling rack wheel set. These can be replaced with anything that fits. Ie rollerblade wheels, bearing and a smaller axle and bolt.

Hello All. I have acquired a used Birdy (not the monocoque style) but the handlebar stem hinge is badly warn at the pivot on one side. Any suggestions as to where can I get a replacement stem from, ideally in the UK but open to overseas suppliers as well. Thank you.

Strangely, this rack does not have the threaded hole to bolt on the rolling wheels. I have since drilled and cut M5 thread into it and now it has the small wheels from the Brompton rack :thumb:

I'm waiting for the carbon seat post and sport handlebar post to arrive, so they will go on next. Sadly my spare 20" wheels did not fit due to the tyres on it. Looks like you'll have to run skinny Kojaks to be able to fit. Shelf that idea for now. Deciding if I should get some mudguards.

Not sure if it can be repaired, but you can certainly replace the whole handlebar post. I'll be doing that in a week or two, hopefully won't be too difficult.

Thanks Desastar, where have you sourced your replacement from? I had another look at my stem, I think there is enough meat around the holes to bore them out to 9 or 10mm diameter and insert brass sleeves to take the pins.

Bought them secondhand sight unseen.... fingers crossed.

An Australian dealer has listed it at A$279.00 new. No cheap.

I am sure they will be fine. At that price I think I will attempt a repair first.
