I have emailed Kemper, and as expected, they replied that they don't ship to Singapore. However they said that I could get a courier like FedEx to handle the shipping.
I have asked them for a quote for all the parts I wanted. Hopefully they have all the parts in stock. I think that shipping to SG will cost a bomb too! :twitchy: |
Usually, UPS is cheaper and they also offer the service to pick-up the parcel from the address you provide (its possible to ask to pick-up the parcel when you order the shipment online, it works both for private and business addresses, you can specify the time when office is open for parcel pick-up).
|
Any major courier can provide pickup. You can get few quotes from those in Singapore to see what will work for you best in terms of delivery times and costs.
|
Kemper is checking R&M on the parts I need and the costs. I've asked for the weight of the parts as well.
Yes, I'll be checking out the courier companies too!

Questions about mounting the dynamo lights
I've unboxed the lights and dynamo rim. A few observations:
1. The Supernova lights are really high quality and well made. The box and packaging looked so exclusive. No wonder they are so expensive. 2. The rim spokes on the Birdy for Asia market (at least Singapore) are all black in color, whereas those in Europe are silver. 3. The Pacific Cycles mudguards are glossy black, whereas the R&M mudguards are matt black. I've connected the front light to the dynamo hub and verified it works. Now I have a few questions, would like to seek help if Euporean owners have some detailed pictures: Do I need to secure the dynamo connector (in grey) to the bike frame? There is no mounting as far as I could see. How do I secure the cables of the front light to the dynamo connector (in grey)? Do I need to get a 2-pin connector? The Supernova front light comes with the wire ends stripped but there's no connector. Since the grey connector is not secured to anything, won't it rotate when I push my bike forward and backward? I believe the front light bracket supplied by Supernova have to be removed. How do I mount the front light to the front bracket? Just need to know which end goes to the bike and which end to the lgiht. I could figure out how the rear light mount can be secured to the brake caliper bolt. Thanks in advance! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...91e3b0d7a9.jpg Dynamo hub with silver spokes. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d69d7d2879.jpg Supernova lights in their packaging. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e8a183c8d9.jpg Love the quality of this light! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ab60a069d7.jpg The grey connector on the dynamo hub. |
European R&M Touring version comes with lights installed by the factory. But nothing is connected to the frame, both wires must be connected to tye dynamo hub. You have to pull the grey connector from the hub and connect the wires. Front light is mounted on custom bracket. Here are few snaps of light mount and hub connection from my Birdy. Hope this helps.

Like for the front light, there is also a special Riese & Müller bracket to mount the E3 Taillight on the rear brake caliper.
|
Yes, these pictures are very helpful! Thanks. :)
I have bought the custom brackets for both the front and rear lights, all the hardware are in there, I just need to know how they are put together. As for the dynamo hub, the grey "SP" connector can be pulled out. It has to be disassembled to run the cable ends.

Before dismounting the front wheel, just need to pull out the SP connector.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b8eb9caba4.jpg Dynamo contacts. I believe I can install the front light bracket and still retain both the front tyre stoppers. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8e7b7372b1.jpg Colorplus front tyre stoppers. |
I assume the Supernova light came with a user manual which should explain how to connect it to the hub. If not you can check their website to download one or request from Supernova.

I will mount the front bracket first, and then figure out how to route the cables. Might have to shorten the dynamo cable. As for the rear lights, I intend to install it on the bottom of the rear rack, just like what glye has done. Likely will need additional cables as the supplied cable is rather short. |
I know it's very common in Europe, but I'm very excited to have this installed!

Looking good. Enjoy it!

For information, below a picture that show how the cable runs from the dynamo hub connector to the front light, its placed inside the vertical triangular tube of the fork. You can also see the cable going from the front light to the rear light that enter the main frame together with the derailleur cable and rear brake hydraulic command.

Thanks for the reference, Jipe
I've managed to run the cable through the vertical tube, but with lesser cable slack. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0d701e3b2e.jpg Will figure a way to run the cables through the main frame, as all the cable outlets are all occupied, the Rohloff hub needs 2 shifter cables, and the last was used to run the brake hose. |
Indeed, the two holes on the rear left side of the main frame are needed and used, one for the rear brake, the second one for the rear light cable.

Can share how do you mount the Toplight onto the bicycle rack? The light requires 2 mounting holes between 50-80mm.

I have the Busch & Müller Toplight View tail light connected to the output of the stock Supernova E3. That is working fine. It seems at least some lights of some other brands are able to work with the Supernova output.
I am generally happy with Busch & Müller. The Luxos U 70/90 lux is very good. If I was going to replace the stock supernova on the Birdy, I might go for the IQ-XS 70/80 lux. https://dynamolights.com/busch-and-m...lumotec-iq-xs/ |
No problem, the rack has a taillight tab with 50 mm spaced holes built in. Just bolt the light on and go. But from your question I guess you have a different version of the rack, without that tab.

You're right! I'm using the Imperium Multi-S 2+2 rack. From the looks of it, there isn't much space to mount a rear light. Neither is there any mounting points.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...79d3c83a81.jpg Think I'll mount the tiny Supernova lights first, since I've already bought them. |
Buying all these separately and remembering insane prices colorplus and Imperium charge for their parts I think it would have been cheaper for you to buy new bike from R&M and have it shipped to you :)
|
You're spot on! Haha. But don't all of us love to mod our bikes? I started off with a GT model from Pacific Cycles (with SRAM 10spd and Blackjack tyres), and converted it to a Rohloff. Now comes the dynamo lights. Back then I didn't know what I wanted as it's my first folding bike, and the Rohloff was just too expensive an investment.

Managed to run the cables through the frame and rear arm. Will be going for a test ride before cutting the excess cables.

To confirm my observations, the Supernova front light will light up when the bike is in motion, and remain lighted for a minute or so after the bike stops. However there's always a delay before the rear lights comes on, and the rear light will be off the moment the bike stops.
|
Huh. That's one more reason for me to not regret replacing the supernova taillight that came with my bike. Presumably it would be possible to wire in some capacitors to give you some standing light, but I don't know how exactly to do that.
|
I don’t want to spoil it as you’ve already ordered and installed them, but if I were to buy a set of lights for my Birdy, I would definitely go with SON Edelux II front and SON rear lights which I have on my Brompton.
|
Unfortunately I can’t test it now, but if I remember correct parking light should feed both front and rear lights. As soon as I’ll drive the bike I’ll check it, unless another member can comment sooner.
Update. I checked E3 Pure 3 User manual and it says standings lights for both front and rear will light for 4 minutes. You should check you’re lights user manual, both lights should provide standing light, front and back. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cbadb9f09.jpeg |
The Supernova E3 PURE 3 and AIRSTREAM TAIL LIGHT 2 are high quality, very well built lights.
But with the quick evolution of the LED technology, they are now outdated in light power. My Birdy 3 that was in stock at a R&M dealer, was from factory equipped with the SP hub dynamo and the E3 PURE 3 + AIRSTREAM TAIL LIGHT 2, it wasn't a real choice of mine. Both lights turn on immediately as soon as the front wheel turns and there is a long stand-light on both. Its provided from the front light, the rear light has no builtin supercap or anything to provide a stand-light. From what I understand, the rear light output of the Supernova dynamo front light is DC, not AC as for all other dynamo front and rear lights, and the AIRSTREAM TAIL LIGHT 2 works with a DC input. |
Birdy mechanic
Good evening!
I am now the proud owner of a birdy mk1 rholoff. I bought it second hand. It is in good condition but still it has been used and then stored for a number of years in a garage. I wanted to have it serviced but my local bike shop has not had experience with a birdy or with rohloff hub. Would anyone know where I could find the right mechanic in London UK? I want to make sure it is cleaned, tested, tuned correctly and also have a number of parts replaced that are basically rusty. Any hint will be appreciated. cheers Geoff |

Your local bike shop should be able to do the usual tuning and servicing such as brake adjustment, chain replacement and general cleaning. For tyres, I'm not sure if they stock 18" ones, but you can replace them if they are worn out or cracked. The Rohloff hub need oil change every year or 5,000km, so I suggest that you get the oil change kit to replace the hub oil. You should be able to get the bike shop to do it for you, as the instructions and videos are readily available. The Rohloff can use any chain from single speed to 11speed, just need to make sure to cut the new chain to the same length. You can spray a little WD40 over the rusted areas to treat them, then wipe off the rust. |
