new MKS pedal
A new innovation to MKS detachable pedals ... the new 'Superior' series uses a twist lock device built into the adapter itself; so no safety washer is required.
http://www.mkspedal.com/superior-series-back.htm http://www.rakuten.co.jp/silbest2/42...02199/2039058/ As best I can understand from web translation the Superior pedals and adapter are NOT backwards compatible with existing Ezy series pedals. |
I never fitted the safety washers to the MKS peddles on my Dahon MU SL and they have not fell off in over 6 months of daily use.
|
Looks like they have a quick-release version of the Grip King! Sweet!
|
I never used the washers either.
|
I never use em either. Are we all just lucky that the pedals haven't fallen off yet?
|
Mine fall off sometimes. It happens when I dismount with a foot still on one pedal. That foot twists slightly and it's enough to free the QR and drag the pedal off. I have learned not to do it :)
It doesn't happen at any other time and it is not a problem. If it was I would use the clips. |

I got some of the fold down MKS pedals on Ebay. They were pretty cheap - about Ģ15 + postage. They are light and neat, but I find them a little slippery in the wet. They'd be better pedals if they had some spikes on the platform to hold the sole of your foot in a bit of wet and mud. I am reluctant to stand up and pump uphill in some conditions.

never use my safety washers either, but i always insist my GF put them on her bike.... is this totally contradictory? i just worry about her safety even though I know the chances of the pedals coming off are slim to none

Maybe you should get a pair of MKS "mini clips" to help secure your feet on the pedals, that is if the type you bought accepts this accessory. I know you said something about your pedals being "fold down".

I use the washers since I don't take the pedals off that often.
What I don't like about my MKS quick release pedals is that the fitting doesn't fit a normal pedal wrench. Not even a normal 15mm wrench. I need a 15mm cone wrench to take them off because of the lack of clearance. |
What's a "safety washer"? Is that something for collapsible pedals? I never heard about safety washers for regular pedals, nor have I ever heard of a pedal coming loose. That's why they make the left pedal with a reverse tread, so both pedals tighten up in use if anything.
|
Not collapsible, detachable. Imagine hose latches for pneumatic tools, it's something like that. The safety washer thing is a clip that attaches to the pedal adapter to stop it from unlatching.
On my first day with my Promenade Ezy, I had the plastic clips on and ironically one fell off. I simply left them off afterwards. The pedals themselves never ever detached. Maybe my power grips prevented my feet from reaching the pedal release? |
hey noteon, could you elaborate?
Hey noteon, could you elaborate: in what conditions do you find the Grip Kings not grippy?
I have no experience with them but have been tempted. |

In wet conditions, they're just slippery metal pedals. If you don't plan on riding in the rain, it's probably not an issue.
http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...160_AA160_.jpg They are not only comfortable because they have a large area for your foot, but provide LOTS of grip even in wet conditions. They are a bit heavy but very well made, and provide a secure feeling whenever you have to get out of the saddle, and "honk" it when the light turns green or go up that nasty hill:D Edward |
Got a link, Edwong?
I use the Grip Kings. You can ride on them barefoot, too, like when I'm coming back from swimming. They work good with my big (12 extra wide) feet, but I use an extender too. As Neoton says, apparently they are not so good in the rain, but it rarely rains here, let alone snows - though it snowed just north of me the other day. Here's a thread on them on the commuting board: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...=363328&page=3 |
Hi, sorry I didn't respond sooner. Here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Pyramid-Bicycl...06887&sr=1-133 As you will see, the price is very reasonable for such a good quality product. Cheers, Edward Edit (12/30): I forgot to mention that these are NOT folding pedals. In my particular case, I never fold my bike anyway so it is not an issue for me.

http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/images/p...arge/10086.jpg If you look at them, you can see that they would be more practical if they had some kind of SHARP serrated edges to grip the sole of your wet shoe. Smooth aluminium edges just won't do that on rubber soles. |
I had MKS pedals on my Dahon Jetstream XP and Speed TR. I live in Okinawa and it's subtropical and it rains when you least expect it. It only took me about two slips and blood on the shins before I pulled those pedals off and replaced them with the Dahon folding pedals. Suntour I think.
Heavier? Yes. But I haven't busted my shins since. John |
