possible bus. trip to Utah, take bike along?
I don't suppose there is any point in taking a folding bike along to a trip to Salt Lake City in the next few weeks? Seems like freezing weather and snow is the status quo. :(

Depends on where you are from and what kind of weather you are used to. I live and work nearby, and a leisurely ride at this time of year is always refreshing, but only if you are accustomed to colder weather.
As for the snow, the roads are usually snowy or slushy for a day or two after a storm (depending on the storm). We got a few inches yesterday, for example. Downtown roads and sidewalks are already clear enough for safe riding, but that isn't always the case. Just keep your eye on the weather reports. If there hasn't been snow for a week or so, and you have some good mittens, glove, and a scarf, a stroll through town can be quite pleasant. |

You're welcome to stay with me - I'd love to meet you! Weather is very hospitable for riding, and a wide selection of bikes available to choose from. Test ride on the Moulton TSR is included. We'll even organize a Bike Forums meet for you! Can you pull that off?! |
^ That may be possible... since the inward leg is via the west coast... I'll see what develops. I'd be glad to accept your offer. :)

I'll pm you with my email and we can follow up there. |
Woooo hoooo - even more magnificent pootles lie ahead of us. Look forward to the pictures.
I'd say Jur is in for a tough period of adaptation stepping out of a Melbourne summer to frozen Utah! Brrrr - quite a transformation, not to say a shock to the system. Salt lake City today -2 to -7 Melbourne today 17 to 41 (Jeez that's hot). So stepping out of a high of 41c to one of -2 will be a shocker. |

Take care, Terry :) |
Damn! I haven't moved to SLC yet. As for riding around in SLC, I think it's eminently doable if the weather works out. SLC also happens to have a pretty decent public transit system that can help you extend your excursions around the city.
That said... if you're in SLC for the winter, I think the best thing to do would be to head over to one of the local snow skiing areas and strap on a pair. Enjoy your trip to SLC or Dallas (though Dallas would definitely be warmer)... and if the trip somehow takes you to Chicago let me know (though there will be no riding in Chicago... too much snow for small tires). --sam |

It probably looks worse than it is... 5% grade for a bit under 10 miles, then downhill all the way. Downhill is where the problems start, with frozen body bits.

I was there last year at about this time and it was pretty icy. I'd take Sesame Crunch's offer and ride in the Half Moon Bay area instead. Much higher probability of nice riding. |

Only if you think mid-60's F is nice riding weather. :p :thumb: |

And in other news, I am commuting home in 42+ for the 2nd day in a row. Just a while ago it peaked at 44C (that's 111F)
 :twitchy: :notamused: :( :troll: :wtf: :P :bang:  |
Jur, given the iffy weather here, it might be wise and easier just to rent a bike when you come here. I am not sure if you can rent a small wheeled bike though. much less a folder. Anyway, whatever you do, have a pleasant trip and be safe.

I guess it depends on how long the trip is. If just a few days, then I wouldn't bother with the bike. If the trip is long enough to involve an idle weekend or more, then nuts to the weather, bring the bike!

I can't speak for the Salt Lake area, but I can say that Moab is in beautiful riding shape this week. Now, I reckon you're more interested in road riding than mountain biking, but hey, figured I'd throw out the idea... after flying halfway around the world, a mere 3 hours in the car to ride in mecca might be worth it? ;)
This afternoon on the Slickrock Trail... (would love to see you tackle it on the 16-inch Birdy, heh! Look tempting?) http://www.debcar.com/images-externa...Slickrock1.jpg Of course in addition to all the famous MTB trails, there's also Arches National Park here, one of the most beautiful and amazing places on earth. Riding on the paved scenic drive is allowed, and this time of year there's hardly any car traffic to battle so it would be a relatively pleasant and safe ride. About 45 miles out-and-back. Here's one link to get you started. If Moab is too far, and the ride you found in the mountains around Provo proves too snowy or such, another possibly interesting area to explore I can suggest is a bit north of SLC--around the Golden Spike National (railroad) Monument. Debbie and I did a little easy dirt road riding on our KHS folders to see the nearby Spiral Jetty, a pretty wild earthen artwork in the Great Salt Lake. The roads around the railroad park would make a decent road ride though I'd think, with some interesting/historic stuff to stop and learn about along the way. Anyway, hope you have a good trip to this part of our country, and get lucky with the weather and get in some good riding. (I also hope you don't end up in Dallas... I can say that since I'm a Texan! ;)) |
Fantastic picture that /\

Oh no! Not Foldsinhalf with his breathtaking pictures again! ;) * jealous *
