The red bike went for 260 pounds, a good price considering they were 330, or there abouts, new. The polished aluminium bike only made 245 pounds, which surprised me, I would have thought the novelty value would have driven it higher.

That is a GOOD price. Having said that, mine has worked really well and is still as useful as the day I bought it. They had a couple of minor niggles, but nothing you can't fix or live with.

£330 + postage. Last time I looked, but you get loads of accessories( cover, front carrying block, front cage and bag, dynmo and so on).

however the bikes are difficult to track down and the price of secound hand ones can fetch good prices. I had fun selling mine on ebay because of bromptons concern over copyrights. Even when describing genuine retrofitted bromptom parts as such. ie A brompton self locking clip is not a "brompton part" if fitted upside-down. Never heard such rubbish. Clutching at straws there I think.
Suspect this is why new Mercs dealers are difficult to find, also apparantly they are not "kite marked"

best prices abroard I have heard.

bhkyte, I am thinking of selling my merc on ebay, to raise cash for a tourer (speed TR or NWT), and/or (ironically) an SL2-X. Can you illuminate a bit on your experience, terminologies you were/weren't allowed to use ?

Strange this, I have had two very different experiences when selling non brompton bikes on Ebay ,but using their name of their bike for one reason or another in the main text of the advert.

Firstly I have sold a Giatex, Diblasi and Downtube giving an honest compairative reviews compairing it to other folding bikes I have owned, including Brompton ; no problem.

The Diblasi even stated in the tiltle that it folded much faster than a Brompton.

As reguards the Merc, I obviously upset Brompton by doing this. And the advert was withdraw twice without firstly consulting with me. I understand Bromptons concerns, but I thought it was a bit heavy handed and OTT IMO.

What they stated was that it was acceptable to refer to the Brompton clip in the main text, but not in the title. I left a refferal in to a certian "british cycle company".

The ebay guide states that you should not mention a companies name whom is not the maker of your item for sale. But my merc had several brompton bits on it.

So do not mention "Brompton" to be safe. I would use a folded picture in large to show how simular the bike is , and describe it, people will get the idea.

A belated thanks for these tips - useful. I think the merc will be on ebay soon, cheers.

Thirty minutes to go and still only £225. That's for TWO bikes ----- I repeat TWO almost unridden bikes....

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=120431433643

EDIT:

Went for £350 in a flurry of bids (27 in all, more than half in the last thirty minutes as far as I can see. I think it was at 12 bids up to the last time I looked at 30 mins to go).

Still a bargain for two bikes that were little used.

The ebay ones were sold at £330 + £8 p&p, but Anita did have a website of her own where she tried to sell them for £400. I don't think the site was much used and it was never very functional.

Speaking of Mercs, I was thinking I might email Grace Gallant and tell them about my broken frame. Who knows, they might even send me a new one. The rest of the bike is fine after a lot of use.
