The new Speed Uno might be fun to customize also.

Just got the new Speed Uno a few days ago and now I am completely obsessed with thinking about upgrades. Its a joy riding around the neighborhood but I would really love to get a taller gear and a 2 speed hub seem like a great alternative. Seem like the S2C kick hub is the only one readily available but I am tempted by the SRAM A2 also, just don't know how long I'll have to wait for it.

Looks sweet! Very tempting, will need to save up some money for the rear wheel rebuilt!
Btw how come you didn't use the bolt hole that came on the bike for the brake arm? Is it not in the right location? Also, how much did you pay for the rebuilt rear wheel?
Also, I kinda wish that the gears are a little bit taller. Not knowing much about bikes, what's involved to install a bigger front gear?

Larger front gear and new chain. Normally there are 5 bolts and you want to make sure the bolt pattern is the same.

The brake arm for the Sturmey Archer B2C Kick Shift is longer than the braze-on fitting. Luckily, the included brake arm clamp worked just fine.

We had the wheel built by QBP ("Quality Bike Products") in Bloomington, MN USA. If we had one built for a customer it would probably sell for ~$220.

I'm not sure. I'm not a bicycle mechanic.

I had a wheel built through https://www.treefortbikes.com/service...22365382___619 and it was $165 shipped to my house. I had it built as a 451 not a 406.

Any suggestion on size? And how do I search for similar front gear with the same bolt pattern? I look through the spec on Dahon's site and can't find any description for the front gear that came on the bike. Ideally I would like to make the gearing 20% taller if possible..

Also, would it be possible to change the rear gear? instead of 16T go down to a 15T or even a 14T?

I'm new to this cycling, I'm purchasing a Dahon Mu UNO in a couple days and I want to get the SRAM automatix, however; how do I determine what gear I want it to switch in? Please help. I tried googling gear ratio 101, but I'm all confused now. What's a good gear to have it set to switch in? Thanks in advance.

What gear range you pick will have a lot to do with your conditioning/fitness and the terrain you want to ride.. The new SRAM A2 is a two speed hub .. gear 1 is a 1:1 ratio and gear 2 is 1:1.36 or 136% overdrive .. Your Mu Uno will come stock with gearing at 62 gear inches.. with the A2, you can gear to run on either side of the 62g/i figure.. personally, I like to run 54/74 gear inches with a 2 speed.. Sheldon Brown's Calculator will help you with sprocket choices to get your desired gear inch based on your riding criteria.

Bruce,

I know quite an old thread but in your first post I see you have power grips fitted to folding pedals.

I love power grips on my TSR2 but I have them on removable caged pedals. I just wondered what folding pedals you used as I would quite like to use those instead of the removable pedals ?

PS did you have to drill them at all to attach the power grips ?

Regards

Jerry

Jerry, I really like Power Grips as well and they are on most of what I ride.. the pictured pedals are stock Dahon folding pedals.. installing Power Grips on these is a bodge for sure, but I wanted to see if I could do it as having the pedals fold has some advantages at times .. as the pedals are mostly composite, I had the drill out .. the front mount is a combination of a through-bolt and a 5mm heli-coil .. the rear mount is another 5mm heli-coil .. I have a set of these pedals on my Birdy as well as the Mu Duo .. so far no issues, over the past few years, but if I were doing it again, I'd look for folding pedals with metal cages and room for the mounting hardware..

Yes.. spacing of the hub is approximately 110mm.. your Mu Uno is approximately 120mm.. so you might have to use a spacer.. those are nice hubs.. IMO, much nicer than S/A S2c..

Good! i already purchased this hub. I will wait for the package
Bruce, another question, with my stock kinetik wheels (28h) i will need to change anything? i would like to stay with my kinetik wheels (the hub also have 28h)

Jens will do a maintenance first, and put new grease in it. I understand that this hub, at certain speed, changes to the second gear, this speed can be configurated by him while he is doing the maintenance? Thank You for your answers!

The R2110 is a 'kick back' to shift hub .. you will back-pedal a little to shift.. the A2110 is the automatic hub which shifts by centrifugal force... certainly, you can use the 28h Kinetix rim, but you may need new spokes if the hub flange diameters of the Shimano and Sachs unit are different from each other.

Bruce, I'm looking to do the same with my Uno using a Sturmey S2C. What size chainring/cog are you using? I currently live in a similar area and will be moving to the Bay Area this year and want something to make my Uno more versatile in hilly areas while gaining some flatland speed. thanks

Its your choice but for me I much prefer the SRAM Automatix. I had two S2C hubs and have ditched them both in preference to the SRAM. The S2C changing is unpredictable and inconsistant. I contacted Sturmey about them and there response and after sales support, was frankly atrocious.

The SRAM is fit and forget.

The only slight problem might be the changing speed. I live in Cambridge which is pretty flat. The SRAM changes automatically at about 7.5mph on a 20" wheel. Perfect for my stop starts on the flat though not sure how well that would work on hills. The S2C is a nightmare to change on a hill anyway.

I know its not my technique as I have one of the old F&S Duomatics with the kick back change and that works every time perfectly.

Regards

Jerry

I'm running a 48/18, but using 451 wheels, so your gear choices might be different.. the Uno uses a standard 110bcd chainring, and the 2 speed hubs use standard 3 dog drivers, so there are lots of ratios that can be used.

My enthusiasm for the S2C has also faded along with its lack of shifting precision. What a shame. Good thing SRAM has filled in the gap.
