Why bother?...the Speed TR comes with a Dual Drive setup that's ideal for a folder and gives you a wide gear range. The Speed TR is also a fairly expensive folder at over $1K here in Canada...if you want to upgrade everything why not buy something less expensive or buy something that has the parts you want to end up with?

Dual drive is sort of normal, a normal Sachs/SRAM 3 speed plus a Normal cassette
and a cassette driver, made to do that .
combines the 2
Though as a wide hub dropout at 135 you could retrofit a Rohloff hub in it, and drop the derailleur entirely ,
unless you need it for chain tensioner , their Chain thing is like Rear derailleur , just doesn't move sideways.

All the Dahon bits you mention are removable. Deore is not a particularly high spec - targeted for trekking and mid-priced bikes, it's now obsolete. Also the Deore V-brakes are 100 grams heavier than the stock brakes on the low price Dahons, and perform no better. They are handsome though and I have them on my bike.

The Speed TR has Kinetix brakes. I haven't tried them. The Dual-drive is an expensive and versatile system. You'll save weight by 'upgrading' to a cassette only system, but loose some versatility, and reduce the excellent and large gear range of the bike if you remove it. There's not much to 'upgrade' on a Speed TR drivetrain.

The Speed TR is setup for touring and is the only Dahon that I've tried that actually fits me. I'd careful buying something else and hoping to upgrade it...it might work, but if you are buying from a dealer make sure they stand behind what they are saying in case it doesn't.

I'm not up on the Mu P8, but just looking at the spec online I can't see how you'll get a Speed TR out of it without a lot of upgrades....the Speed TR has the following parts that the Mu P8 doesn't:

- dual drive [24 speeds] ideal for touring on a folder
- Schwalbe Big Apple tires [comfy and decent rolling resistance]
- upgraded bars and grips for bigger cockpit [may or may not matter depending on your height....for me these are essential]
- front and rear racks
- dynamo front hub and dynamo headlight for 24hrs a day light without fuss

I can't see how you add all this to a MU P8 and save any $$$.

I'm not 100% sure the frames are the same between the Speed TR and Mu P8...they may be, but it's worth at least comparing the bikes side by side. I have to say the fact the dealer won't let you test drive makes me suspicious.

Personally if you want a touring bike I'd get the Speed TR and ride it the way it is for a season before you upgrade anything major. It seems like a good choice.

I did get 2008 TR from Thor about few weeks ago and been thoroughly enjoying it. I am still not sure if I like the dyno at all on front hub. However, the dual drive and handle just makes me grin every time I ride it (which is everyday). Just about everything is perfect on this bike for what I've been looking at sans few things.

1) Brake cable wiring in front is a bit messy. It extends out bit much I think.
2) 2010 style rear rack and front rack would be much better than 2008 for practicality and clearance issues.
3) Dyno... isn't as smooth as I would have thought... probably will end up getting new wheel to replace it.

For the price it is on Thor, nothing can touch it is my sentiment though. (short of non-folding bikes) Only thing I would probably be looking in folder side other than this would be maybe tikit. And Only drive train that I would replace might be Rohloff... which is twice the cost of whole bike!

today i bought the 2010 speed tr.I also have 3 bikes tarmac, allez and scott hybrid p5.
the bike handles like big bikes, also its fast not fast as tarmac but its equel with the p5 which has 700c wheels.
The pedals are very bad maybe its because i am used to spd pedals.I will definetly upgrade my pedals on monday.
The dyno makes the wheel slow but its cool to have it later i will buy the reecharge gadget soo i can charge my iphone.
You change the angle of the bars i am used to road bike vars soo i get the lowest possible
Everybody is looking me
and bye the way i have seen a girl running with the dahon in her hand to the metro in the brochure of the bike.Let me say it straight its bull**** this bike is 15kg and i am 80 kg and well muscled indeed i am a bodybuilder and i can not run with this thing in my hand hehehe that girl i think have a carbon dahon
