Do you clip in...

...with the clips on your clipless pedals?

I bought some Shimano SPD MTB shoes for the er, MTB in the spring, which I ride clipless.

I'm now wondering if I dare fit cleats to them and whack some clipless pedals onto Ye Dahon.

Do you folder-people clip in?

djgonzo007 07-15-10 11:31 AM

I don't but I have thought about it. Mostly I use my folder for shorter rides and would prefer not to lug around an extra pair of shoes.

fietsbob 07-15-10 11:53 AM

There are the EZY Quick release Snap in Pedals , that you can get,
pop in a plain shoe toe clippable, a
Big grip king pedal or pop in Spud type Clipless..

but it's an MKS, not Shimano cleat on the shoe , I think .. not owning any

[N.B. I have some Shimano M520 new but a takeoff from a used bike, to sell,

if anyone is interested]

SPD pedals on folder and on the other bikes. Can walk moderate distances in the SPD shoes and sandals if I have to.

Awright, I'll whack a pair of these on and attempt near death. I can walk in the MTB shoes, without sounding like a demented tap dancers.

I've taken the clipless pedals off all my bikes except for my road bike...platforms work great, I love wearing street shoes and I haven't noticed any performance loss for city/touring/utility cycling.

Grishnak 07-15-10 02:16 PM

I still have platforms on the Folders and Twentys.Do have clipless on the recumbent,i really don`t want my foot falling off the pedal on that one!

lucille 07-15-10 03:23 PM

I was used to riding clipless on my other bike, so bought same pedals for the folder as well. As I got it mostly for touring/longer trips clipless makes sense. If I was getting a second folder for around town, I would probably get platform pedals and ride in regular shoes.

TrekJapan 07-15-10 03:29 PM

I have five Dahons.

Mu P8 - platform pedals
Speed P8 - Platform pedals
Jetstream XP - SPD
Speed TR - SPD
Speed TT PRO - SPD

The first two bikes are my ride around the base at work bikes. I keep the P8 either in my car or on my patio and I keep the MU-P8 in my office. The other three bikes get the longer hauls for exercise around town. Its sufficiently hilly here you want the extra power that being clipped in provides.

Clip-in on both Brompton and Birdy. For me they make a major difference in power and standing-up safety.

SesameCrunch 07-15-10 03:57 PM

I ride SPD-SL's on my 2 road bikes and the Moulton TSR because I go far and fast on them. :giver:

On my other folders I go with the original folding pedals or MKS EZY pedals with straps. Don't feel like I need the extra efficiency or performance on short folder rides. Plus, there's no need to carry 2 pairs of shoes around.

Just had a perverse thought that I should put some SPD-SL's on my Strida . I'll do that for my next HPFS ride. That'll give the members a laugh and maybe earn me a picture in the Yearbook :thumb:...

BWP 07-15-10 09:44 PM

Give me a nice big spikey platform pedal any day

stevegor 07-16-10 12:40 AM

All my bikes are either SPD or road pedals...... I feel weird if I'm not clipped in.

Been doin' it for too long to change back to the dark side

AEO 07-16-10 01:07 AM

Yes.

I use bebops. Not only are these excellent clipless pedals, they're actually quite compact and reduce the space occupied by the pedals when folded.

Bebops? What are these miraculous contraptions with which you tease us?

Oh: Wow!

I think the HPFBS is so old fashioned it hasn't quite grasped the concept that bicycles can actually fold. When Jur was saying he had 'egg-beaters' on his bike I figured he'd gone mad and was living under canvas on purpose for a fortnight. 'Egg-beaters' are quite expensive here, though.

SPD's are winging their way as I write. If I'm not back on Monday, I'm trapped underneath my bike and being gnawed by bears in some Hampshire ravine.

Bubba Zanetti 07-16-10 02:02 AM

Switched solely to clipless pedals on all my bicycles after my knee surgery. Now, after 2 yrs riding solely clipless, I can't ever imagine riding a bicycle without them, including my folder.

I've never used anything but platform pedals, so maybe I don't know what I'm missing. However, seems to me that with the stops and starts, lights and stop signs of my urban commute, not being able to get off the pedal quickly would be a major problem.

snafu21 07-16-10 11:13 AM

This worries me too. ?I'm accident prone. I fell off the MTB today, by running over a small stone. In town, if clipped in, I could be dragged under a behemoth, already.

AEO 07-16-10 12:12 PM

due to the step-over nature of folders, I've never found it a problem to be clipped in.

I've went down at a decent speed on my folder, but me and my bike separated.

brommie 07-16-10 12:48 PM

Did use clipless, but now back to platform. So now I decide what bike to ride (Airnimal Joey or Brompton) and what shoes I should wear and not my pedals. Didn't notice any change in speed or distance. And platforms are much easier use in city environment.

veloceleste 07-16-10 01:32 PM

I use dual sided Performance campus pedals. They are SPD on one side and platform on the other. The best of both worlds if you ask me.

They are designed to clip in and out fairly easily, if they're too tight then you need to adjust the cleat or pedal. Very easy to get used too, you overcome the feel factor of being clipped in AND despite some saying there is no difference between platforms and clipless this is in fact, incorrect. If you know how to pedal correctly then with clipless your efficiency is greater than platforms can ever be, sorry no argument.

nekohime 07-16-10 08:30 PM

I don't have a death wish, so no, I do not clip in. If ever I do wish to commit suicide though, I'll let you guys know.
