I ordered the speed uno. Its a few lbs heavier. I am a bike newb. Reviews on amazon for the mu uno concerned me (issues w grease and folding mechanism). I want a simple bike with little maintenance. Amazon appears to love the speed uno over a 100 positive ratings compared to a few ratings on the mu (most are not good). So, I figure the speed uno is a good choice. If I can stick with the bus/bicycle commute then I might change to a different bike.

I received my speed uno. It seems to be a pretty good basic bike. There wasn't much to assemble or adjust, after all it is a single speed bike (so i think taking this bike to a LBS to setup is a waste). I have one ANNOYING gripe with this bike. Dahon did not include the magnetic latch with this bike, instead, it comes with a plastic ball socket latch. The plastics latch sucks. IMO, it has to aligned well for it to work. I am disappointed with thi cost cutting measure. Especially when amazon/dahon lists the magnetic latch as a main selling feature. Did anyone else get a plastic latch instead of the magnetic one?

There was some mention earlier in the thread about the difference in the hinges between the Mu and Speed, but I didn't really see an explanation. I gather that the Mu has a newer technology built into the hinge, but is it better? Does the fact that the Mu is aluminum, which I think is softer than the steel used in the speed, make the difference in hinge technology a wash? I'm trying to decide between the two, and I don't know whether the Mu is worth the extra $150.

Mu owner here. 150 difference is a lot but worth it. The hinge alone is a good upgrade not to mention its lighter by 2lbs. The fold alone is fast. Definitely a good buy.

The Mu Uno definitely has the more solid latch. Worth the extra $$$ IMO.

OK, with the exception of the crappy single wall rims, I like the Dahon Speed Uno. I've seen it can now have a front caliper brake, but can one be installed one the rear? And what's the rear wheels OLD? Is it 120mm? I'd do a 3 speed upgrade on it. Anyone know if what I want is possible? Modding my Speed P8 isn't something I want to do, as all it really needs is a derailleur upgrade. The Speed Uno I want to be igh.
Wait, I just located a 3 speed Shimano Nexus hub in 120mm,...and it's a coaster brake. Funny!!! Never mind,... :p |
Decision time
To be honest I'm a bit confused with the options currently available for the mu and speed uno 2016! The colour options are not clear as they seem to differ from online dealers. I like the black Matt ones I've seen but can't seem to find them online. I'm in uk. Few years back I did purchase a dahon single speed for work. However I had to refund as it had a faulty wheel and
Which kinda put me off! Im now lookin at a speed uno 2016! From triton cycles whom are based in Essex England. £320. Any one have any suggestions ?? |
