brand of internal gear hub on the Brompton
Hi all,
I know SRAM and Sachs is together. So anyone know the comparison between Sturmey Archer and Sram in 3 speed on a Brompton? I had 3 speed Sturmey Archer on my Dahon "game over" before. Does it mean the Sturmey Archer is made in China so quality is not so good? I am thinking buying an used Brompton. Do I need to be aware about the brand on the internal gear hub? I know they put different hubs on different year. Thanks! |
actually the investment made in the manufacturing of bicycles is huge in Taiwan.
[NB : ROC is different from PRC, read up on the Chinese Revolution to know] the Sun Race Company bought the British Company that was going under. SRAM, [bought out Sachs] is also made by Taiwanese companies.. Most bike brands are made there, too, by now. many times it is the Taiwanese based company that subcontracts manufacturing out to a mainland China based facility. the Sram/sachs hub used in Mk3 bike is wider ratio difference, than the AW3 It was the 1st 3 by 2 6 speed hybrid.. splines on those is same as 3 speed hubs, just made to hold 2 of them.. They also make a cassette driver/3 speed for 7, 8, 9 speed cassettes over the years. Current BWR hub is custom manufactured by Sturmey Sun Race for Brompton. another wide range 3 .. 1/2 stepped with 13 & 15t cogs, adopting Shimano cassette spline. You can learn a lot buying a copy of the Brompton Book, published last fall .. I did.. |

newer ones have more options, , IE the 1 and 2, using their new custom 2 cog cassette hub.
and the 2x3 SRAM was sourced for a while aka . the Mk3 Mk2 in the 90's there were the 5 star hubs with 2 levers and 2 indicator chains, and the AW3.. I got a used 3 speed its circa 94.. parts chosen changed over time, when it was made more closely can be matched to serial number listing in the book. |

how about the model after 2005 with Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub? on the hub it says: Sturmey Archer the original and the best. Is this the one you meant- old Sturmey-Archer 5 StAr hub?

If you see a used Brompton for sale with an old Sturmey-Archer 5 StAr hub, either pass on it or buy it with the understanding you'll need to replace the hub with one that works. On the up side, if it still has the original 5 StAr you can guarantee the bike doesn't have many miles of use!

5 speed hubs are 2 3 speeds 1 narrow range 1 wide range combined
Hubshells were steel, If you had the book you would know the 5 speeds went out of production, and Andrew Ritchey bought up the remaining 3 speeds they had made for their company. so 3's would outnumber the 5s my 94 AW3 hub is steel 5 star would be in a Mk2 frame. cable runs to each side of the hub. during S-A reorganization Sachs , now SRAM supplied the Hubs , made for Brompton.. they are a little wider ratio, then is when the 2 cog shifter was developed for 2x3 gearing. the newer Sunrace Sturmeys have aluminum shells , wheels , stainless spoked. there is a current 5 speed version, single control lever. but that would be a retrofit. |
