Any help from the experts for an unusual problem?
I hope you can help, this may be slightly unusual for you. I've a spinal injury that makes mobility a problem especially when I arrive at an airfield in my aeroplane. Could you have a look at this 2 minute film and tell me what you think? The bike has to fit through a 21 inch diagonal opening to be able to fit in to the luggage compartment behind the seats. If a folder will fit it would be fantastic and would help my mobility enormously. I wonder if I fit quick releases to remove the wheels that might help? Thank you.

You might get a Brompton in if you pull the seat post out - that brings the 22.2" dimension down to 21"
Folded dimensions : 585mm high x 565mm long x 270mm wide (23" x 22.2" x 10.6"). Though trying to cajole a 10kg bike into that space won't do your back any good. |
That's not much room back there -
Check out the Pacific Carryme? http://www.pacific-cycles.com/produc...&cat2=7&pid=11 or the A-bike http://www.a-bike.co.uk/store/home.php (if you don't have far to ride). |
A Brompton with a telescoping 2 section seat post,
would make removing saddle, to get the overall size down to 21" an easy thing.. It's a option from the factory, .. or after the fact if you buy a used Brommy. |
Another micro folding model is the A bike.

Thankyou for your suggestions. It looks like I need to get the bike and try it for size. I've found someone with a Brompton so I'll start there.

where are you located....???? fly to Olney Illinois, I pick you up on the airport and bring some bikes to try out. I am thinking about the Curve SL from Dahon. You would of course take the seatpost out and store it seperately and the pedals are quick release as well.
weight is around 23 lbs... http://www.thorusa.com/dahon/technical/bromcurve3.jpg http://www.thorusa.com/dahon/technical/bromcurve2.jpg http://www.thorusa.com/dahon/2009/curvesl.htm I only have a handfull left of them. Meaning you have to fly in pretty quickly ..... ( red 3 speeds I have many more, no rush) |
Thank you brakemeister for your very kind offer, fantastic actually and made me smile. Unfortunately I'm in England so can't take you up on your offer. The Curve looks good and potentially a good fit with the wheels removed so thanks again for the pointer, I'll definitely be checking it out.

lol .... possibly a little difficult to fly over than.... not impossible but nearly I assume
thanks thor |
out of the box thinking..
they put external fuel tanks on airplanes , maybe an external folding bike tank? .. Air frame mechanic could rebuild that part of plane with a larger hatch door. |
