"Hot Rod" Tokyo
Well - finished the mods on my new Tokyo. Here's what I did:
Replaced plastic folding pedals with alloy non-folding MTB pedals - seem sturdier. Replaced tires with 100PSI Kenda Kwest along with puncture resistant tubes. Replaced seat with vintage Brooks B72 Saddle Replaced freewheel with 11-30T unit. Took a quick spin around the block last night and the new tires and freewheel definately equate to a nice improvement in top end speed and handling. Have been riding the seat for a few days now and that alone increased comfort and overall rideability significantly. FYI - took my 26" Gary Fischer HKEK (set up as a commuter) on my commute yesterday and I think I actually missed my Tokyo! Pics to follow... |
I find the tires and saddle alone affect the ridability of the bike the most. It can make a bike that feels slow to feeling like you can be on this all day without feeling tired. I've had a friend who has a vintage dahon and he just bought some 40 psi tires to go to work daily cause he knew I was biking daily. So I gave him my 16" 75 psi kendas since i'll never use it again (upgraded mine to 18" wheels) and just from that he saved 10 minutes off his commute time!? Then he spent on a good saddle and told me it was a pleasant ride now..... since I tried his bike seat and asked if he still wants kids.
Awaiting the pics of your slick bike, get some ergon grips on there for more handle holds also. :) |
ditto to the pics of the upgraded ride!

Primo Tokyo
Hello,
Glad you're enjoying the new mods to your Tokyo. Here is mine, it is now one year old and going strong. Latest mods are 58T Chainring and hacked Ritchey drop bars with bar end shifters (rear only, the other is for symmetry). JahWind https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-X.../NewSetUpR.jpg |
Nice! Where did you get 58t chainring? Did you have to replace cartridge and crank arms too?
|
Primo Tokyo
Bike Friday has the chainrings, however, you do have to change the BB and cranks.

These folks have 56 & 58t 110BCD rings, also 130BCD. http://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi...id=71217686256
