Dahon speed p8 2011 possible conversion to IGH?

Im just wondering if its possible to convert the p8 to an IGH and the cost of it. anyone tried it?

I love the p8. its very agile and solid. I dont think the vitesse will ride the same as the speed p8 but i envy the IGH.

what is the rear dropout width? measure and report back.

brakemeister 08-11-11 01:10 PM

most likely 130 mm... and vertical ...

you will need 5 mm extra ... and different dropouts, or a chain tensioner....

while the 7 speed IGH Vitesse is only 749.00 shipped ....
Not known what the TernLinkD7 will be .........the Tern S 11i will be quite a bit more of course ... when available ...

Get the new Dahon Speed Uno $379 with track dropouts and add a Sturmer Archer 8 speed IGH for about $151, and get a wheel built. Find some brakes and levers and close to a Speed 8.

brakemeister 08-11-11 02:50 PM

no v brake atatchments on the speed Uno !! You will need long reach calipers ..... to make it stop

Dynocoaster 08-11-11 03:17 PM

Are the brakes that the MU Uno use the same for the Speed Uno?

Will these work? http://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ils&ProdID=833

wow thats complicated =) I do love the idea of IGH. The speed p8 is my first dahon. Maybe it wont be my last folder.

while i love my speed p8, im really wondering why its so expensive. the rack and fender costs $40+$40= $80. The p8 comes with nothing. its still more expensive than the alloy mariner and the cheaper speed d7.

Also, why is it considered a touring bike/ performance and not a community and utility bike?

What qualifies as "performance"?

Normaly you can convert a bike w vertical dropouts to IGH by using a eccentric BB and a "half link". If you use a chain tensioner I think you can not use a coaster brake and for me one less cable would be one of the reasons for going IGH.

It all depends how and where you ride. Personally I am thinking of getting rid of the front der and two chainrings on my 24 gear folder for simplicity. Also thinking a lot about going IGH on it.

Edit: What I did on another bike I converted to Nexus7 was to grind down (angle grinder, watch your fingertips) the anti rotation washer(s) and put it on the innside of the fork, where the hub is. Then you need another washer same size on the other side. On some (newer) hubs there is a anti rotation washer on both sides. In that case you grind them booth down to the right size.

I did a older Nexus7 and bought the Shimano Alfine 8 Speed Fitting Kit CJ-8S20 cassette joint unit http://www.practicalcycles.com/userimages/procart90.htm

I can not remember if I used the blue or the green. The important thing is to use the OPOSITE one of what you would normally use since you put it in the innside instead of on the outside of the dropout.

yes those tektros will fit.
and yes its complicated to make a switch....
dunno what your opinion of expensive is... but if 100 bucks sounds expensive than rather do not have thoughts of redesigning a complete bike .... the folks who are experts in modding their bikes know all too well that a budget of lets say 300 dlr just get you started...

the price difference between mariner and speed d 7 versus speed P 8 is in the letters...
D = deluxe
P = Premium
on the P bikes almost every part , from spokes to rims, to cranksets, to chainrings, chain, seatpost, saddle , handlebar, grips, brakes ...
is a small bit nicer than the deluxe counterpart .....

If you know the extra price increases of every part its a super bargain to go with the P bikes ....

Yes, it's possible. I really like the P8 we have just as it is, but I have converted a different folding bike to IGH. It's not that big of a deal.

You didn't state any goal beyond just having an IGH, so we're operating in the dark about your required/desired gear range & etc.

An inexpensive conversion would involve a three-speed IGH wheel kit and a single pulley chain tensioner (under $20). Hmmm - you might possibly need vertical dropout anti-rotation washers as well (depending on whether those or the horizontals come in that kit), but they're available and not expensive.

BTW, on the high side, a Rohloff+eccentric bottom bracket conversion could run $2000!

Could you do an eccentric bb on the Speed frame? Would this involve cutting out the old bb shell and welding in an eccentric bb shell, or is there one that will fit into the old shell? If so, it seems better to look for a new bike than do the conversion. I believe Raleigh and maybe Giant are making igh folders.

A Forward Components EBB would work on a Dahon... I used one on my older Titanium road bike conversion for installation of a vintage Sachs 2 speed Automatic hub..

Some similar stuff discussed here. Fixed or IGH, both are trying to go without a chain tensioner on a vertical dropout frame.

You, sir, have no shame, posting pics of your droolworthy bikes here all the time.

I purchased a used Alfine 8 speed with shifter, tensioner, and assorted fitting nuts on Ebay. The person upgraded to a Alfine 11 speed and sold this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=320742379813

I wa thinking of what I want to put it on and my Mercier Nano was a good choice but I really wanted a folder and this came up today and I went for it http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...EOIBSA:US:1123 Now I have to build a wheel for the Alfine hub.
