Mounting Ergons on Brompton M bars - now w/photos post #8

Well, that was easy. Took some GP-1's off my mountain bike as I wanted to replace them with a bar end version and simply took a box knife and cut the Brompton grips off. Terrible grips and not worth saving IMO. Didn't bother to clean the goo off as it provided a tacky surface to help with the new grips (which easily slide on).

Measured to the brake lever housing, grabbed a hack saw with a fine tooth blade, and made a clean cut to each grip. A little sandpaper to clean up the edges, slipped the grips in place, and Bob's your uncle. I know a few have put GC-2's with the stubby bar ends on but I didn't think they'd work well for me and my hands.

It's a *significant* improvement and a much easier job than I feared it would be. Highly recommended.

I fit a pair of GC3 L , grip shift model Ergons on my Brommy M, it was a snap.
No grip Mods needed.
the longer Bar ends interfere with the fold, of the HB mast,
to the catch [by an inch] But..
with a loosening of the bolts that secure the grip/bar-end to the bar ,
they can be rotated out of the way. to still fold as before..

I like bar ends in general but I felt they'd interfere with the heal of my hand on the now 4 1/2" width grips. And, the fold is everything to me as to the main reason I bought this bike. Interfering with it is the last thing I wanted to do.

Next, either moving my Brooks B17 off the MTB or ordering a new one. ;) Then, maybe, some strapless toe clips.

Something akin to GP1s are necessary on a Brompton IMO to make the front end more forgiving.

If you don't mind me asking, CSG, where are the photos you were planning to take of your new Brompton? Especially now with the upgrades you just done. I have trouble visualizing what you have done.

I took a few but now I've got to upload them. I'll try to put them here tomorrow.

I`d like pix of more than one of the bikes mentioned. Just bought my first B (and one for my son) and put a black brooks on mine. Want ergo`s but would like them to match the saddle. Since we need the compact fold I do not want bar ends integrated in them but I was thinking to buy some barends that can be added when we need them for long rides.

Excuse the clutter in the background. The bike is in the back of my Land Cruiser which is in the garage.
