Bike friday trailer users, negotiating stairs

How do you handle stairs and escalators at places like train stations, airports, and other public buildings?

I have used my BOB with my Salsa Vaya and have trouble in the elevator at work. I usually take two trips, but do not like doing that as the trailer by itself is hard to handle with a load and I don't like leaving the second component while I take care of the first component. Also, then I have to hook it all back up again which is a pain.

I guess I'm telling you that it ain't easy and I am not sure there is a solution.

I planned a trip using both on Amtrak, but then decided against it because of the hassle. Will go lighter now (no trailer - only back pack) with a folder.

The Bike Friday trailer unhooks very quickly and easily so elevators and escalators I usually deal with by unhooking it. Then both pieces generally fit easily in an elevator and I can carry both onto an escalator side-by-side. Stairs I try to avoid, but again, unhooking and then carrying the two pieces separately works ok. I carry the suitcase by its handle even if the wheels and trailer tongue are attached. Depending on the weight in the suitcase I may make two trips or try to carry both items in one trip.
