Questions about the Brompton rear rack

Do the extra wheels make a whole lot of difference when you're rolling it? Is rolling on the little wheels even efficient whether you have a rack or not? I'm just wondering if I should spend the extra money. I'm planning on buying the bare essentials only.

I rarely use the wheels, but I use the rack all the time.

The EZ wheels are a nice feature, but it isn't perfect. The wheels can't take a lot of weight so if you're shopping for a family or planning on carrying a big load they don't work so well. Plus, the rack is small so the width between the wheels is not too far, so it's easy to tip over the bike if the basket/bag on the front gets full. Finally, the wheels are small so if there's a carpet or mat on a tiled or concrete floor it has a good chance of snagging and getting caught in the wheels.

One of the reasons I bought a Brompton was for its shopping cart mode, but because all the grocers where I live have throw mats in front of the produce departments and other places, I never use it as such. I use the Brompton for just about everything else, and the rack comes in handy quite often.

If I had to do it all over again knowing what I know now, I'd still get the rack, but not because of the EZ wheels...just for the rack.

Some folks buy bigger scooter wheels.. to roll better,
but the optional Ez wheel upgrade is narrower, adding heel clearance up front..

so there is that consideration..

roller on the mudguard is OK too..
it is more there for the folding action
you just rock the bike back and
roll it on the 2 frame rollers..

The four wheels, one in each cornet of the rack is much more stable than the three wheel solution with the crappy small roller on the fender. If rolling is important get the rack.

You can start without the rack and try it out and add the rack later if you decide you want it.

Correct. But be aware that the rear mudguard for the R model is not the same as the rear mudguard for the L model. The kit to add a rack (which includes the rack, rear mudguard and reflector) is currently ~$160 US.

My experience exactly. The rack is much more stable if rolling is important to you, and it's occasionally useful when you need to tie down something. My wife's Brompton has only three wheel solution and the fender roller is awful. I'm tempted to just break it off and head down to the local hardware store and get a single roller for a few dollars.

mudgard must be the same, just other holes drilled? Different stays and wheels I think. Depends how crafty you are and how neat you want it to look .
