Wheel quick release for Dahon Speed Uno
 

Hi,

can someone recommend me a wheel quick release part for my bike?
I plan to only have the front wheel removed but I'm not sure what time would fit the Dahon Speed uno.

Thanks, is that the whole wheel assembly? I'm located in NYC, because of Sandy I've been using my bike everyday. I see other riders remove their front wheels to prevent theft.

aw, sucks. Is it possible to just buy the leveler and install it on my wheel? My wheels are still good.

Got shop skills ? if a common axle, you can take a QR axle
and cut it shorter to fit the narrow forks of a folding bike ,
if not you can pay someone.

Basically to cut something threaded, put the nut on, first, and then cut it,
and removing the nut partially restores the thread , then clean it up with a sharp file

These will be your easiest way of getting quick release on your stock wheels. Only issue I can see is maybe interference with magnet and metal magnet disk on the fork. I've tried these before, and they do work...just need to get them set up properly.

Other then that, its a new wheel or trying to find a compatible hollow axle and swapping out the hub internals.

I'd say either carry a stubby 15mm wrench or get a new front wheel. Less hassle.

Cutting the axle is not as easy as it sounds. The problem is the Dahon hub is 74mm compared to a normal 100mm front bike hub. A normal axle is also partially threaded. If you cut the axle shorter, you might not have enough inwards threading for adjusting the cones and lock nuts.

Unless you can get a 74mm hub axle from a dahon dealer.

The reason they have to remove the front wheel is because it has the quick release which makes it easy to steal. If your wheel is fastened on with nuts, the druggies have to be carrying a wrench to remove it. I say druggies because they do not see a wheel, they see a fix. Serious bike thieves are not going to be stopped by anything but carrying your bike with your when you go inside, even for a few minutes. That is after all one of tlhe advantages of folding bikes.

What about leaving the wheel and install some detatchable pedals instead? Take the pedals with you (and possibly the seatpost) and leave the bike with the bolted on wheels (at least until you need a new front wheel)?
