Has anyone ever try to anodize their folding bike parts? I'm thinking to anodize the silver seat post and handle bar to matt black.

Would be helpful if someone can recommend a place in Chicago that i can do it. Thanks ahead.

Based on information in another post, I am assuming you have a Dahon Mu P8. It might be easier and cheaper to just buy the Biologic seatpost pump in black (See: https://www.thorusa.com/accessories/seatpost.htm). Also, some Dahon models have black handlebars. ThorUSA might have set of those available.

Try the Yellow Pages.. Anodizing is electroplating an aluminum Oxide on Aluminum base.
the color is a dye added to that new surface.

I tried to look for one in Chicago, but the one I found require a minimum lot of $250. I don't know if there are any company that will take small order from a hobbyist instead of manufacturer order.

Hey there hamh...

I'm a local guy... I live in the far north 'burbs, but work downtown in Chicago near the Theater District.

I too have been considering applying different finishes (including colored anodizing) to my Birdy frame if I decide to strip all the paint off it this winter. I haven't found local places that do color anodizing in my searches at this point, however, I have really been focusing on finding a good, affordable place for powder coating.

In my searches, I'll post back to this thread if I come across a place that does colored anodizing.

Wow!! I had no idea that one could do this at home!? That said, I will not dare to attempt this, I'd rather pay someone else to do the grunt work with electricity and acidic chemicals. It's interesting to see how people are doing this at home though!

the first few steps are relatively doable, but when it comes to the dye in certain temperature, it's difficult if you don't have the heating device...

Take a look at youtube to see if there is films you can use. Do not fear electricity, water and chemicals (unless you live in a flat). I did some serious rust remowal from the strukture of an old (7o`s) car trailer this summer. Just do some serious research and go for it.

I remember somebody selling "do it yourself" kits for home anodizing. Several colours in the kit I think.
