London Nocturne Excel Centre 17-20 January 2013 - Folder Race

Seems like they are going to have bike racing at the London Bike Show at The Excel Centre, 17-20 January, including a folder event :-

Will Dahon trump Tern again, or is there a new boy on the block, we shall see on the day.

There are dark mutterings that Dahon's whitewash of all the field last year was because, a) they had a pro rider from Amsterdam, b) the Anniversary bike was 'not a production bike' and only weighed three grams, and c) it had 'funny' tyres, carbon fibre indicator stalks, and 300 gears. Dahon's boy, Jeroen Janssen was 9.5 seconds ahead of the rest of 'em.

The video of the start shows shambolic scenes as some Bromptonauts fiddled with frame latches and pedal clips. I know this is not typical, but the start was not too competitive.

The Le Mans start is more for comedic effect I think. It would be a bit more gladitorial with a rolling start and the riders issued with paint-ball guns, tasers, or aerosol whipped cream cans.

Last years Smithfield race was sponsored by Tern and their sole dealer, Evans Cycles; so it was probably a point of honour for Dahon to win, given the legal wrangles that were, or are, going on.

I think there were a few professional, or at least serious club riders out that day, posing as commuters.

Well, I hope Dahon pull it off again. Only because I'm a Dahon nerd, though I expect Tern to field a stripped-down frame, Durango tyres and a pro rider this year.

Some of the bikes were racing with rear racks attached last year. Cripes!
