Chain Guard/Chain Keeper suggestions?
 

I'm looking for a lighter/cleaner looking alternative to bolting on an aluminum chain guard to keep the chain from falling off to the outside on my 1x8 setup.

This would work, but I was hoping to find something lighter/simpler etc.

I was hoping one of these Brompton chain guards might work, but I'm not optimistic. Does anyone know if there is a way to make one of these fit on a non-Brompton 130 BCD chainring?

I realize there are a bazillion different chainrings out there. The chainring I would like to mount it to is a "standard" Shimano 53T ring.


Any ideas?

Just have to have a chainring you can drill holes in to mount those..

in a year maybe the spares for Bromptons new spider crank will be available

I have a chainguard + chainminder on my Brompton, [removed stock BB & Crank]

Schlumpf includes one, and will make many sizes. mine;
His mountain drive.. a 54t 130 BCD

& another on the Bike Friday its a 53t, they get them made for their builds.

You can often put on a front derailleur with no shift cable. It's both cheap and effective.

Why not trace something out on a piece of plastic and make your own? Then just bolt it in place with chainring bolts for doubles.

If it'll take a year for Brompton to release spares, that kind of rules that out. However, your the Mountain Drive looks cool! I had no idea those existed. Lucky!

Unfortunately, my seat tube is 41mm with no derailleur hanger so the front dummy derailleur is pretty much out. I would have liked to use the Paul Chain keeper, but it won't fit on my seat tube, nor will any other seat tube mounted keeper.

But, tracing my chainring onto some plastic...that might work! I think I'll try that out and see what happens.

J. Gaerlan used to sell a roller kit... I used it back in the day on my Xootr Swift (with a 41+mm seat tube).. adjusted properly, chain won't fall to the inside or outside of the chainring.

A simple light bracket which overhangs the chain in the position of the roller shown in the photo also works. Anything to arrest the sideways chain movement from shifting to a higher gear will do the job. I have used both a roller and a bracket.

If it were me, I'd figure a way to get a front derailleur mounted instead. Since you're not using it for shifting, it doesn't have to be mounted as securely as usual.

In normal operation, the chain wouldn't touch the derailleur, so there's be no additional drag. But if the chain decided to make a run for it, the derailleur would be there to keep it in its place.

SpokePoke: Try BBG Bashguards. They should have a lightweight bash guard that will fit your needs.

I agree in terms of function, but the real difficulty here is that my seat tube is 41mm in diameter and there is no brazed on derailleur mount. So then I would need to buy a special derailleur mount for this seat tube and then find a derailleur etc. I really want to go with a clean/simple/light setup.
