Suggestions for 349 wheel project.
 

Hi I have just aquired a mezzo nexus rear wheel. Bought really as a spare, or to convert a D9 to I4 in future. I dont have the D9 at the moment!

Any other suggestions as a project?

Ie list of 349 16" 135mm axle wheeled folders, preferable cheap

Ideally I would like to add this to a newer Diblasi R4 with V brakes but 305.

Only because I own 2 Bickertons they are the worst riding bikes I own. I would choose almost any other 16 inch frame set before them. One of mine is the early version with the 14 inch front/16 inch back and the other is the later version with a 16 inch front/20 inch back. The early version is worse a bit than the later version but not by much. Roger

more like a good value "Sport direct" dunlop bike or simular but with 349 rims

The Bickerton is around 120mm dropout width at the rear.

it would be more fun to do a 349 conversion on a bike like a dahon prestolite or piccolo or curve sl..

Why?

I was not being serious when I suggested a Bickerton and I believe the dropout spacing is narrower than 135mm but suspect it wouldn't be difficult to widen. My Bikerton owning friend was taking an interest in my Mezzo I4 wheel and asking what I was doing with it after the dual drive conversion.
The sports direct bikes are 305 wheels, I don't know what the dropout width is or if there is anything that's likely to stop a 349 from fitting. They don't come with mud guards so that wont be a problem.

because you would be starting with a good quality frame and.. i've never seen a 349 conversion done on one of these. or on any bike, for that matter.

Agree about quality, but the hassle of a conversion does not interest.
"Downhillwuss/triathete" converted a dualdrive space genie after buyinh the wrong rim (305) for it.

What I would like is 349 suggestions, not worried too much about quality as it will be a guest/spare bike

Problem with 305 to 349 would have break reach problems if the wheel fits. Would you have a look at the dunlop ? Thxs

Will do next time I visit the relatives. I am sure I have seen v brake extenders somewhere on the internet. Basically a plate with a couple of slots in it from memory. Something like this:

Measured the Dunlop dropout but had to do it by eye as I only had a ruler available and make it approximately 127mm.

Fietsbob my 1965 Moulton F frame 4 speed uses 349 16 inch wheels. Roger

Moultons were fitted with 16, 17, and 20 inch wheels with the 16 / 349 being the primary wheel size used in the 1960's, the 17 inch wheel is a proprietary sizing used by Moulton and they have also adopted using a 405 / 20 inch wheel on some models.

Just fitted nexxus to my sach dualdrive mezzo as the dualdrive is being serviced. Works fine on this bikes as I have afriction twist griP shifter fitted. So I can cope with the extra gear. Considering set up another bullbared sash dualdrive mezzo and a 4i for a fussfree workhorse.

I will be intersted to sse how you find it going up hill as the I4 has a smaller chainring than the D9. Its fairly steep and long hills where I run out of gears on my Mezzo. I also run out of gears on the flat with a tail wind and downhill but with the larger chainring I doubt you will have too much problem.

A friend had one . i did like the front rack mounted Zzipper fairing he got for it.

Its geared up ok. Not really had a proper test run. Its pretty flat in york where I am.
My gold bike is my "wet" bike I feel the dualdrive is a bit overkill and high mainence on a hack bike.

I think what I might do is get annother mezzo d9,4i getting rare used,and convert to 4i.
gold sach bike to bullbar with brifers
and use a spare dahon andres stem to get a. Compact fold.
Going off idea of converting 305 as I like to use big apple tyres on a dunlop.

Get older bike with steel rims and bling it up, replace front with a spare brommie wheel I have got add some modern spares I have kicking around. Hens teeth problem though.

Raleigh RSW16? Here is one for sale in York, a bit ratty though.
