it is as much an american bike as is possible i think - white industries hubs and cranks, thomson seatpost, selle anatomica saddle, paul brakes, velocity rims, handmade wooden fenders, custom cromo racks, and that lovely paint job... although i think i wouldn't buy such a bike even if i could afford it. i would constantly be worrying about scratching it... it's too precious..

1969 jack taylor "small wheeler"

http://www.blackbirdsf.org/taylor/im...ll_wheeler.jpg

wow. i never knew this existed. according to bobbiker, jack taylor made 21 of these machines in 1969. reynolds 531 frame with 349mm wheels. in 2009, a client purchased directly from taylor the last two remaining frame sets. the bike featured in this set of photos was built up in 2009. elliot bay bicycles fabricated the stem for this build.

NOS SA hub, also 1969 vintage, was used in the build. very nice touch.

That is so gorgeous. Jack Taylor was quite the rider in his days. There are times when I wish I had membership in good standing with the "Heavy Wallet Brigade". Must be nice to be able to go to a shop like Elliott Bay Bicycles and say --"Here's what I want, can you build it"?

Definitely getting the two speed automatic shifting from Respect Cycles as soon as they release it! I'm thinking this is the go to company, they seem to have found a good frame size and now doing different builds off of it.

I'll never have to take a 2-speed hub apart n tinker with it, instead I can just watch this video haha https://respectcycles.com/automatix-build/

Those are great hubs.... I was modifying the 2 speed automatic hub Four Years Ago .. but I wound my own springs to replicate the existing torsion type springs used, as opposed to a compression spring (like the Bic pen)... not that a compression spring wouldn't work long term, but I preferred going with a torsion spring.

What are those white-walled tires? ^^^

DoubleDiamonDog 10-19-13 10:07 PM

bobbiker has an incredible collection of expertly restored bikes and Elliott Bay Bicycles / Davidson Bicycles produce excellent custom bicycles for many purposes.

Kenda Kwests.

They've done special colored tires before(celest green ones for limited Bianchi Milano),but I've never seen them for sale,so you'd prolly have to contact Kenda to find some.

Interesting. I've considered those tires because they seem close to the Haros that came on my BF, and I like the profile and feel of the Haros. I've got the Kwest on my mth bike.

But getting back on topic, love that Jack Taylor, that unsuspended Tony Rentschler, and the BF on the previous page.

Very nice! (And it actually folds, too. :D )

Well -- Ok, perhaps a "Diamond in the Rough". A little TLC and a nice paint job would make it a stand out for sure. An interesting placement of the chain tensioner. I think for me, I would keep it assembled. Not exactly the best bike for travelling with. One could miss his/her flight trying to take that apart. Perhaps arrive at the airport/bus depot/train station earlier than normal.

It's what I'd call a packing bike instead of a folding bike. You give up the instant fold, but you get a lot in return. And I'll point out that you can't get a Brompton into a 22x14x7 container.

The gearing choice is interesting (two very different speeds - has to use hand as there is no front derailleur), but the builder built it for himself and it works well for him.
