Sturney & Archer hubs & Rims
Morning chaps,
I been looking at running 'Sturney & Archer' 70mm drum hubs w/ 3 speed on a brompton.
Over Locknut Dimension grr, so....
I noticed that Loopwheels have used the Dahon Mu for their carbon sprung spoked wheels. They using a wider fork made my dahon, and also to my surprise the 'Sturmey & Archer' Hubs.
Emailed them this morning, asking for a possible quote for a bare-ish bike with hubs, so no rims / spokes / tyres.
The Dohan Mu in UK is around £550 ($900), considerably less than the £1400 ($2300) they are asking for the bike with loopwheels on. My wallet gained Sentience and bolted, and I Also considered no modding and ready to go with a quick wheel rebuild.
I been doing research on the drums as a brake, and like the idea.
Anyone have experience with 'Sturney & Archer' hubs on gear changes and reliability, and also would love a suggestion on a good 36h/20" rim / spokes / tyres?

I have a Sturmey XL-FDD on my son's city bike, so far so good. I have a couple of the old AW hubs that are pushing the 50,000 mile mark and are still ticking away. The only modern (post 2000) Sturmey hub that I have heard of any issues with has been the 5 speed, however that is what is on my son's city bike and it has been almost a year and no issues.
My normal rim of choice for 90% of my builds is the Sun-Ringle CR-18. I do have a couple of other Sun rims as well as some Weinman. I would look for double wall eyelet.

I am still using the British made Sturmey archer hubs as my studded tire, Icy road Mountain Bike ..
the things are 100% reliable for 25 + years.
with 20" wheels it is typical to use regular 100mm wide front axle's forks . only with the smaller wheels
as used by Brompton and Some other smaller folders is the 75mm wide axle adopted.
I have a S-A made 3 speed on my Brompton, those have a 28 hole shell, but no drum brake ..
but they manufacture a narrow rear axle ^^ with the sun gear on it ,
you can overhaul the hub and play with the way the Right side is ,if you wish
and then get the proper indicator chain to go with it.
Want to play with the 36 hole combination ? Crows foot .. divisible by 6.
2 groups of 3... 1 radial in the middle of a cross pattern, of say 2X..

with the hub and small wheel, surely there angles on the nipples ain't good for the rim. Especially if the rim is alu and spokes SS?

And what are your recommendations? Chrome steel rims? or aluminum spokes and nipples?
FWIW I have a variety of small wheeled bikes using alloy rims and SS spokes, no issues here.

Sorry, I'm referring that, if I use a crows pattern, wont the angles of the nipples be to high for such a small wheel w/ hub?

I've built S/A hubs to Velocity Aero Heat rims with good success.
On my current Birdy, which I bought whole, the wheels are pretty interesting -- 36 spoke hubs laced to 28(?) hole rims, with a few extra spoke holes unfilled at the hub end of things. Rides great, no issues with out of true wheels...
