Wireless shifter from SRAM

I just came across this article about a SRAM wireless shifter being used at the Tour of California. Things really are changing in the world of cycling. Who would like one of those on their FBs?

And what does that have to do with folding bikes? You have now started 2 posts that have nothing to do with the subject area of folding bikes. You have a good post but put them in a place where they belong. Roger

I beg to differ. Changing technology like a wireless shifter has everything to do with a FB. Perhaps the article in question doesn't relate to a FB directly, but the components mentioned can and perhaps will one day. My question was - would anyone like one on their folding bike. The second post, I'm assuming you are referring to the one about Road ID, was presented to this forum out of concern for its members. Perhaps that might have served best in another forum, but I wanted to present the information out of concern for those here that I have grown to know. If I was out of line because of rules and regulations, then I'm sorry. I feel that concern for those we know, can at times overrule those same rules and regulations. Does everything have to be carved in stone. But anyway, I will be mindful of that in the future.

That's OK Roger. I have many days perhaps like the day you are having when you feel like someone just pi$$ed in your Cheerios.

Cheers
Wayne

I would love wireless shifting for my folding bike. The cables get unrouted every time I fold and I have to readjust them to make sure they aren't binding or hitting something. My Dahon came with these useless black plastic clips to hold cables in place which popped off after a few folds. I had to replace them all with tie wraps.

That was my thoughts. How much better for a FB if we can eliminate some of the cables. I'm with you on that one.

I wonder what the savings or increase in weight will be.

Also, I don't like Cheerios.

maybe someone will hack that and mess up your shifting , thru their phone, so they will win.

BTW I see Wires in those pictures .. its not wireless ..

Shimano Di2 & Campag also have electronic shifting SRAM is Playing Catch up, to their competitors. they are connected by wires too..
the gear they pay the racers to ride so the lumpen masses buy it so it will make them fast too , or so the thinking goes..

you really need to stray from this narrow folding forum and look at the rest of the site . that gear is old hat for the Avant Garde.

SRAM installed false wires on the early prototypes to conceal what they were developing...

You need to improve your terminology. Wireless means radio control. That is not wireless.

And.... they SRAM has already said it's several years away from commercial (retail) production, and this has no real relevance to folding bikes either

I am aware of the wireless system but the linked page plus its description talks about wired, not wireless.

So does SRAM have wired and wireless systems?

Prolly an increase in weight due to the battery and servo motors, although this could be offset if you are already running a dyno hub. Electronic shifting really is the next big thing. It's set-and-forget,plus wires can be routed easier than cables. Wireless would be even cooler for folders since the lack of cables would help with folding. BTW,there's already a company doing wireless:

Me neither. Some of the new flavored varieties seem interesting, but I could never get into the plain originals.
