choosing bromton for touring in abroad
 

I am planning a bike touring around Japan, soon. Although I will carry camping gears on the bike but may need to jump occasionally. In japan, bike must be in a seald bag to travel using railway. Folding Bromton seems to be the best choice for this purpose. However, my problem is that there are so many models. Which model of Bromton should suffice my need best?? Thanx guys..

I will say 6 speed R version, for better climb and easier maneuver folded and more luggage capacity. You need a front carrier block for the front bag. Handlebar style depends on your riding preference but some bags won't fit S bar.

I agree 6 speed R version but I might add with reduced gearing. Japan has a lot of mountains and you may want the lower gears. For bars, maybe the P bar for touring, but I will let others chime in on which version of bars. If a folding bike is not your style check out Rinko style of bike touring. There is a good article on this in Bicycle Quarterly Summer 2014 edition, plus others online.

is it called P6R at bike shop?

go M6R*, Add Ergon GR3 (or GR1) grips [P you only get to use their round sleeve grips ] Get the small chainring .. its a 44t.

*H6R if you are a few inches over 6 feet tall ..

Now I realized that P bar is something like 'trekker handlebar' for Bromton. I have a plenty of handlebar grips of Humpert. So M6R should do the job. Can I ask for specific chainring when I purchase/order bike?

except the P is Vertical to fold flat. my trekking bars are almost horizontal (bike friday regular threadless stem.. )

you have 3 factory choices 44, 50, 54t.. but the newest crank uses a standard 130bcd type replaceable chainring .

others have substituted a Shimano spec 39t , wont have the trouser guard attached to the chainring like the new style do.

Surly's Stainless steel chainrings are nice on single ring setups.. any thing from 39 to 50 t will do ..
I use a 38t-110 on another bike.
my Bike Friday uses an aluminum alloy Vuelta 53t 130bcd.

Once its in your hands you can change the whole crank out too , just get the chainline right ..

I own a Carry Freedom City trailer , Carry Freedom Website | 3. The CITY Trailer it folds flat within it's own frame.

and has 2 rollers on the back edge to let it slip into the space between 2 back-to-back seats on trains.

the bag can be carried on your body. as can the Touring bag on the bike..

+ the trailer will also carry the folded up bike on top of itself ,
to say run quickly to a train car seat reservation, that may be at the far end of the platform.. trailer towed in hand.

I used mine recently to carry my guitar in its case , lashed down ..the neck end extending to the left over the tow-handle..
