Not sure what it's for. I can't think why one would want to be able to swap wheels like that. Unless you wanted a bottom bracket that high. I still can't see why.

A "Family bike" for all members?

Largely what is going through my mind. I've never ridden a bike with a bottom bracket that high; but I imagine it would be a strange.

For folks of different sizes changing wheel size is unhelpful, IMO, since what one really wants are different saddle-to-crank and saddle to handlebar distances.

Usually when riding with your kids you'd be on your own bike. Like Jur said I don't know why would you want multiple wheel sizes, if i'm looking for a bike I'll buy the wheelsize that i'm looking for in the first place. That way the bike is correctly setup for that sizing. This bike looks kinda off with the big wheel size and the very high BB to compensate for the varying wheel sizes. not to mention you'll have to have all these wheel sets lying around taking up space when our folders take up the exact same space and ready to go without a need to get your hands dirty pulling off wheels all the time you want to ride.

I'll add a quick caveat ...

I can see a place for bikes that fit two rim sizes to accommodate different tire widths. For instance, a bike that can fit 406 and 451 tires according to whether you want wide or narrow tires. This would keep the total wheel diameter close ... 406 + 2 * 50 = 506 versus 451 + 2 * 28 = 507 ... and the bottom bracket height roughly the same. Off the top of my head, I imagine that one could build frames for 507/520, 559/584, 584/622.

A solution in search of a Problem where there is not really one.

I could build a 2nd set of 451 wheels for My Disc Bike Friday to swap for the 406 that it has now , If I wished .. But I Don't. :p

It's a bike that the wheels can be changed.....

I think what they are trying to achieve is "Instant bikefit", there must be other parts that are adjustable (the saddle is very suspicious, the stem?). Anyway, will find that out next week.

That's how my BBU's are designed. You can run 700's with 28's or 26's with 2.1" knobbies. Let's you have a commuter and MTB in one. But what they're doing above is pretty extreme.

I didn't realize that the Cannondale Bad Boys could accommodate such a wide range of tires. It's a wonderful idea. I've thought about picking up one now that my riding has changed with the kiddies, but MTB cranks are just too wide for comfort. I speculate that you could do something similar with a Surly Troll.

I once heard that there was a custom manufacturer -- I think Steelman but I could not locate it on his website -- was building a disc cyclocross type bike for 700c, 650b, and 26" tires.
