Skype

Has anyone else here installed Skype?

If you have a microphone and speakers, or a headset, connected to your computer, you can make free internet telephone calls around the world. It's been great to talk to some of those people who regularly visit my blog (www.rodneyolsen.blogspot.com) and I'd love to be able to chat to a few BikeForums members.

It's free to download and use. You can find all the details at www.skype.com.

My user name is rodneyolsen. If you're using Skype, please say hello and let me know your user name.

Bah... internet gamers have been doing this for years already. Ventrilo/Teamspeak/Roger wilco etc.

They usually end up as gigantic conference calls. I looked into skype and it sure is a pretty big program. Haven't found any reports of it containing spyware however.

If you want something more robust (and even smaller), speakfreely supports encrypted communication (PGP anyone..).

hehe, you shouldve seen me and a friend in CS.

we both have CB radios and he lives down the street, so I could radio enemy positions to him while I was dead and in noclip mode

"Ryan theres a guy behind that box to your left, spray it in the middle and to the right."

*Headshot*

"ohhh yes"

Anyway, my sister has been trying to get her friends to download skype. Then she can talk on the computer instead of tying up the phone line for hours at a time.

Ventrilo was great back when i was a guildleader in Everquest.

I could just spout off my mouth while doing everything else I had to in game...it made leading a raid so much easier when you don't have to worry about your orders scrolling off the screen.

"Oh, wait I was supposed to park a cleric?"

**OH BLOODY ELL!!, blowing my combat skills, raid wiping in 10, PARK ONE NOW!**

"wait that scrolled off the screen"

**ARGH!**

"what happened"

(sound of me biting a hole trough a 2-liter pop bottle in frustration of a raid that took 4 hours to go flat in 20 seconds)

Instead:

Ventrilo: **Hey guys, one of you park a cleric in case things get sideways, this is going to be a rather close one tonight**

"OK will do"

**sweet**

.....and there are webhosts that for very little a month will host ventrilo servers for you. I was paying like $15/mo or something for a 64-user dedicated ventrilo server.

I've heard good things about Skype though, but at the time it just didn't do what I needed it to....40-50 people on at once can be a real pain.

I'm sure you can make conference calls but I simply use it as a telephone to speak to one person at a time. Your on-line status doesn't show unless you want it to so you decide who you talk to and when. I'm sure it's not suitable for everyone but it's great for my needs.

I have Ventrilo, Teamspeak, and Skype...Skype is amazingly clear. I actually use it to talk to a few people, wearing a headset it works great...I cannot stand people who use their "boom mic" with their speakers and everything echos *sighs*

My brother-in-law uses Skype for his business. Most of his clients are in South America and he is in South Florida. It saves him a lot of $$$. They are pretty computer savy and the only problems they have run into is that sometimes solicitor get the number and bug them..

boom mics can nwork good with speakers, but it's just a matter of placement.

i preferred hanging my boom mic around my neck, using a chain and loop I had lying around. It was far enough from my speakers that no echo was present at all.

That mic was so sensitive it was picking up the music I was playing (most boom mics are super sensitive)...but people started to make fun of DJ Shadow (one of my favorite hip hop artists), since they thought his beats sounded like porn music...that was the beginning of a long line of really messed up jokes for some time.

We're using that too - lingo. Works well for us, particularly for calling relatives in Europe. Gives us 3c per minute calls to Australia, too.

For our computer literate Aussie friends and family, we've been using Skype. Easy to use, and now that we've gone wireless in the house we can use it anywhere (rather than being tied to the study...). The interface is quite simple for those with low computer literacy, and I haven't noticed any spyware issues.

Aw come on. My headset/mic I got was about $7.

No of course the quality of the headphones aren't grado sr-80 level, but for gaming it works perfectly fine.
